Although Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez have been the most used central defenders for Hansi Flick this season, there is no doubt that FC Barcelona have a surplus of centre-backs in their ranks.

As a result, the next season can see several changes in this area of the team. In addition to the departure of some of the current centre-backs, one new arrival is also expected, as Jonathan Tah has been closely linked with the Blaugrana club in the last year.

The German defender is in the last year of his contract with Bayer Leverkusen and is highly likely to move in the upcoming summer transfer window for free.

In fact, as Fabrizio Romano has highlighted, Tah has already confirmed that he will be leaving the Bundesliga club at the end of this season, as he talked to a media outlet. In this regard, the defender commented:

“Everything was said from the start. There was a point in time when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here… It remains that way now”

The centre-back is reportedly looking for a new challenge in his career, and despite the best efforts of Leverkusen, has not renewed his contract.

Barcelona had already made an offer for him last summer, when he had only one year left on his contract, but the German side decided not to let him leave. On the other hand, the Catalans continued negotiating with the player, and these negotiations between the two parties are very advanced at the moment, even though Bayern Munich are also pushing for the centre-back.

Both Hansi Flick and the sporting department agree on Tah’s signing. The German coach likes him mostly because of his ability in the air, speed, and mastery of the offside trap, a key part of Flick’s defensive scheme.

The two sides are almost in agreement about his arrival, but Barcelona will have to ensure the exit of at least one of their defenders before signing the German defender. Andreas Christensen seems to be the most likely candidate for a departure.
