Barcelona confirm deal for free agent Marcos Alonso | OneFootball

Marcos Alonso has signed for Barcelona after having his contract terminated by Chelsea.

The Blues announced his contract had been canceled by ‘mutual consent’ shortly after the transfer window had closed on Thursday night and the player has now been unveiled by his new club.

Chelsea had already done significant business with Barça just before the deadline passed, with former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returning to the Premier League in a €12m deal.

Alonso, who operated as a left-back and left wing-back during his six-year spell at Stamford Bridge, was deemed surplus to requirements by manager Thomas Tuchel after the recent arrival of Marc Cucurella from Brighton.

It is the first time the Spain international will play for a club in his native country since leaving Real Madrid for Bolton way back in 2010.

The versatile and experienced 31-year-old, who has nine senior caps for La Roja, joins Barcelona until June 2023.

He follows in the footsteps of his father and namesake Marcos, who spent five years as a winger at the Nou Camp in the 1980s.
