After a strong start to the Ligue 1 campaign, things have gone south for AJ Auxerre, who are still seeking that elusive first victory in 2025.
Over the first few months of this season, the reigning Ligue 2 champions surprised many, winning six of their opening 12 contests in the top flight and were particularly strong at home.
Christophe Pélissier’s men won five of their first six Ligue 1 affairs at Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps, but lately, they’ve not been quite as sharp in front of their supporters. Their 2-2 draw against FC Toulouse on Sunday gave them five consecutive home draws, a club record for the Burgundy side in this competition.
That also extended their winless run to 10 matches across all competitions in what was another game that will feel like a defeat for AJA.
They have failed to win their last three league contests in which they opened the scoring, squandering two second-half advantages against Toulouse.
Coming into the last month of 2024 with 13 out of a possible 15 points from their previous five domestic affairs, Auxerre were in the running for an improbable place in Europe.
However, going winless in their last nine league fixtures has significantly changed their outlook, as they currently sit nine points back of a spot in the Europa Conference League after 21 matchdays.
Although they are 11th in the table, only six points currently separate them from AS Saint-Étienne and the relegation playoffs, while they’re just seven points above Le Havre AC for an automatic relegation place.
Their five successive home draws in Ligue 1 are not only a club record, but they’ve now surpassed their longest stretch without maximum points at Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps from their previous top-flight season in 2023-24 (three).
AJA have not dropped points in six consecutive Ligue 1 home fixtures since the 2007-08 campaign (six) when they finished just four points above the relegation zone in 15th.
Auxerre’s next home game takes place on February 22nd versus Olympique de Marseille, who have more away triumphs than anybody in the league this season (eight).
