Saul Niguez, currently playing for Sevilla on loan from Atletico de Madrid, is preparing to face Barcelona this Sunday in what promises to be a highly competitive match.

Interestingly, he has revealed that Barcelona once had the opportunity to sign him when they held a preferential option for his services. However, circumstances led Saul to stay with Atletico instead.

The player reveals that negotiations between Barcelona and his representatives were advancing well, but just as things were progressing, Atletico offered Saul a contract renewal.

“My entourage was, as far as you can see, talking and we were quite close. Then when I got it there was nothing left because I had renewed my contract with Atletico Madrid,” he said as quoted by SPORT.

Faced with this offer, the midfielder chose to extend his stay with the Madrid club rather than seek a move to the Catalan giants. His decision back then was pivotal in shaping his career trajectory.

“The whole issue of the environment, that yes they were negotiating, but well, Atleti presented me with a renewal offer and I decided to sign rather than leave,” he noted.

Praise for Flick

Turning his attention to the upcoming clash, Saul recognises Barcelona’s resurgence under Hansi Flick.

He acknowledges their impressive form, pointing out that they seem to be playing with renewed confidence and strength, making them formidable opponents.

“You know the level they have and that, in addition, I think they are at their best, they are returning to feel comfortable.”

In addition to his thoughts on the game, Saul has also expressed his opinion about Lamine Yamal, one of Barcelona’s emerging stars. He cautions against comparing the young player to legends like Messi.

“If they want him to do well, they have to slow down a lot. First, because Messi is unique. I don’t think there’s going to be anyone who comes close to him. Cristiano is unique.”

Saul believes that such comparisons can place unnecessary pressure on Yamal. Instead, he advocates for allowing the youngster to develop naturally without burdening him with expectations.

“They are players who have been 10, 15, 20 years in the elite giving a stratospheric level. Since the European Championship, Lamine Yamal has been spectacular, but comparisons are not good.

“As a Spanish fan, we have to protect the boy, let him play, let him flow and let things work out well for him,” he noted.

With both teams aiming to secure important points, the encounter between Sevilla and Barcelona is expected to be a thrilling showdown.
