Manchester United played out a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. Here are our player ratings from the game.

Andre Onana 6 – Came up with one or two big saves in the second half that ultimately saw United get a share of the spoils. His distribution was good.

Noussair Mazraoui 6 – Much better after the last two difficult games. Got forward a lot more and kept Jaden Philogene-Bidace quiet. Peculiarly substituted at the break and fans will be hoping he didn’t pick up an injury.

Harry Maguire 7 – Defended stoutly and was first to everything. Received a harsh booking from the ref before he was withdrawn with an injury.

Jonny Evans 8 – United’s best player on the pitch, especially in the opening 45 minutes. Produced some very important interceptions and tackles that kept Villa from getting in and testing Onana. He slotted perfectly next to Maguire and picked up where he left off in the second half.

Diogo Dalot 6 – A solid performance overall. Aside from one instance where he made a reckless pass that nearly allowed Villa to counter, he was mostly good. Big block in added time to ensure United snatch a valuable point.

Kobbie Mainoo 7 – Tidy in possession and helped to keep things ticking for United in the middle of the park. He also helped the Reds regain possession a few fair times.

Christian Eriksen 6 – Almost similar to Mainoo. Kept it nice and simple, helping United have a semblance of control that has been lacking in the early stages of the season.

Bruno Fernandes 5 – Very underwhelming in the first half but got slightly better in the second period. Unlucky not to score with his free-kick effort as he was denied by the crossbar.

Alejandro Garnacho 4 – Didn’t provide much threat. The Villa full-backs had his number for most of the game and his most notable contribution was winning a free-kick in a dangerous area, from where Fernandes hit the bar.

Rasmus Hojlund 3 – Offered next to nothing, at least in terms of trying to find the back of the net. Got nowhere with most of his actions. During a match in which Ten Hag needed his number nine to come up with the goods and relieve some pressure off his shoulders, Hojlund simply didn’t deliver.

Marcus Rashford 6 – Drew two big saves from Emi Martinez. If United were to score, the goal would have probably come from the England international. However, he forced Ten Hag to take him off after receiving a needless yellow and then committing a reckless foul just moments after.

Substitutes

Matthijs de Ligt 7 – Replaced Maguire adequately and formed a formidable partnership with the experienced Evans.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Did well at right-back and let very little get past him, in a largely unfamiliar role.

Antony 5 – Didn’t do much during the time he was on the pitch, except a speculative shot that required Martinez to swing into action.

Joshua Zirkzee 4 – Made no difference whatsoever and carelessly kept giving the ball away.

Casemiro 5 – Not enough time to have an impact.

Erik ten Hag 6 – At least the team was not too open at Villa Park and set up the defence well. The major downside is that United didn’t fashion nearly enough goalscoring opportunities. Remains to be seen whether a draw is enough to keep him in the job.
