The Arsenal u18s are set to face Manchester United in the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals next Friday, with the club deciding to host the game at the Emirates Stadium rather than Meadow Park.

Before that, Adam Birchall’s side had a couple of u18 Premier League matches to deal with, facing Southampton at the weekend and Brighton this Saturday.

If these two games are an audition for next week’s match at the Emirates, Dan Casey and Louis Zecevic-John came through the first half of that process with flying colours.

The game didn’t start well, with Southampton’s Korban Mcmullan giving his team the lead. But Zecevic-John pounced on a loose pass 11 minutes later, racing clear of the defence before squaring for Casey to score a simple finish for 1-1.

Zecevic-John was involved in Casey’s second goal early in the second half, beating his man on the right and playing a nice cross in. Daniel Oyetunde flicked the ball expertly onto Casey to finish.

Casey completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute, firing in a lay-off from Zecevic-John. The midfielder now has 12 goals in 11 league games for the u18s this season.

Casey returned the favour by pinging a long ball to Zecevic-John three minutes later, and the winger again beat his man and ran through to score.

Southampton pulled one back in the 87th minute, but Zecevic-John made it hat-trick of assists finding Alex Marciniak with another cross for 5-2 in injury time.

With the three points secured, it’s just a matter of keeping the momentum going against Brighton on Saturday.
