Mikel Arteta could mix things up as Arsenal turn their attention from the Champions League to the Premier League.
Arsenal (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Kiwior, Tierney; Partey, Zinchenko, Odegaard; Nwaneri, Trossard, Sterling.
Fresh off a stunning comeback win on Wednesday to demolish Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the Champions League, Arsenal will now turn their focus to the Premier League.
The Gunners have won just two of their last eight games in the competition, and their hopes for a title run are almost over. The 13-point gap to Liverpool seems nearly impossible to overcome in six matches, and one would assume that the club now has its sights set on the UCL trophy.
The last time Arsenal beat Real Madrid midweek and played in the Premier League in the weekend head coach Mikel Arteta decided to rest as many key players as he could, though injuries to back-up players limited the options.
Gabriel Magalhães, Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all out until the end of the season, while Jorginho and Riccardo Calafiori’s statuses remain unknown. The defender picked up a knee injury in the last international break and hasn’t featured for the Gunners in over a month. The midfielder, however, was subbed off against Brentford and wasn’t even on the bench at the Santiago Bernabéu.
This could mean that the centre-back pairing remains the same (Saliba and Kiwior), while other starters such as Thomas Partey, Martin Odegaard or Declan Rice could feature from kick-off due to the lack of alternatives.
The Premier League has taught us that there is no such thing as an “easy game” – even though Southampton (and Leicester lately) have been challenging this unwritten rule this season. Still, Arsenal are the second-best visitors in the league, with only Liverpool (35) picking up more points away from home than the Gunners (28). Ipswich, on the other hand, are the second-worst hosts of the current campaign, winning only seven points and performing considerably better on the road (14 points).
The Tractor Boys look set for relegation, currently sitting in 18th in the league table, 14 points behind West Ham with six games to go. The newcomers have conceded twice as many goals (67) than they have scored (33) so far.
Still, Kieran McKenna’s men have been somewhat competitive recently. All signs logically point to Arsenal as heavy favourites, but Ipswich did avoid defeat in two of their last three Premier League matches, drawing at Chelsea after going up 2-0 by half-time and upsetting Bournemouth with a 2-1 win – both away from home, though. In their last appearance in front of their own fans, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Wolves, scoring the first goal but conceding twice in the final 20 minutes.
Arsenal will be hoping to have the perfect ending to their week, looking to ride the momentum after knocking Real Madrid out of the Champions League and win three points in the Premier League while resting as many players as they can.
