Aston Villa have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Norwegian wonderkid Sverre Nypan.
The 18-year-old, who was attracting interest from Arsenal and Girona in January, is expected to leave Rosenborg this summer.
The Norwegian side are thought to want around £10million for Nypan and Villa are the current favourites to sign him.
Villa’s president of football operations, Monchi, was spotted at Rosenborg’s match against Valerenga in the Norwegian Eliteserien on Monday.
Nypan’s father, Arne, confirmed a meeting with Monchi took place and he also praised Villa as a club.
“It was pleasant, but there were no negotiations. Just a very pleasant meeting before an exciting football match,” he told Norwegian newspaper Adresseavisen.
“I understand that there are many rumours surrounding Sverre. Villa are also a big and fantastic club. Beyond that, I have no comment.”
Nypan is understood to have visited Villa in January and it was thought he could leave Rosenborg then.
The teenager and his father, however, decided to delay the decision over his next club until the summer as they did not want to rush the process.
Rosenborg sporting director Micke Dorsin has confirmed that several sides are still fighting to sign the midfielder, with Nottingham Forest also now linked.
“I think there are many clubs in place today that are looking at many players,” he told Norwegian broadcaster TV2. “Among others, Sverre. It’s good for everyone and for Norwegian football.”
Arsenal were keen on signing Nypan in January, when they wanted to bolster their squad, but it is unclear if they remain in the race for him now.
The Gunners have a new sporting director in place after Andrea Berta was appointed to succeed Edu at the end of last month.
Arsenal’s priority this summer is to sign a new striker that will bolster their attack.
