Arsenal: Mike Dean issues verdict on Myles Lewis-Skelly red card appeal

The youngster was shown a straight red card for tripping Matt Doherty

Former Premier League referee chief Mike Dean expects Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card to be overturned should Arsenal decide to appeal the decision.

The youngster was controversially dismissed just before half-time for a trip on Wolves defender Matt Doherty. VAR audio confirmed Michael Oliver's decision as contact was made above the ankle.

Speaking on Sky Sports at the time Dean said: "I've got a still image. If you see it, you can see why the referee has decided what he's done. He's put his studs down the inside of his leg.

"Now I've seen the other image, you can see why he's been sent off."

Arsenal went on to win the game 1-0, with Riccardo Calafiori scoring the only goal in the second half. Asked after the game if Arsenal will appeal, an "absolutely fuming" Mikel Arteta said: "Hopefully we don't need to ... That's for the club to decide what is the best decision. It's that obvious that maybe we don't even need to [put in an appeal].

"He's really happy now that the team won and found a way to win it. He is very worried about what's coming next because he's strongly feeling that there was nothing to do with the action."

Dean, following up on Arteta's comments, believe Arsenal would be successful is, as expected, the decision is reviewed. He told Sky Sports: "They've got grounds for appeal ... I would think, if they appeal, the way ex-managers and ex-players [on the panel[ look at it. None of the players will think it is a red card, so they may well win the appeal."
