Arsenal have made their move. In what appears to be a calculated and aggressive opening gambit, the Gunners have submitted an offer for Sporting CP’s world-class forward Viktor Gyokeres, according to El Nacional. Their reported bid of €60 million (£51.1 million) is a clear sign of intent — and an effort to steal a march on their European rivals.
The north London club are hoping to “get ahead of a bidding war,” as per the report, with Mikel Arteta seemingly eager to avoid the protracted sagas that can develop when elite forwards are involved. With Gyokeres having netted an astonishing 52 goals in all competitions this season, Arsenal’s keenness is hardly surprising.

It’s a significant moment in Arsenal’s long-standing search for a consistent, elite-level No.9 — a position many feel they must upgrade if they’re to genuinely challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool next season.
The numbers speak for themselves. Gyokeres has been in blistering form, and while Sporting CP remain reluctant to part ways easily, his €100 million (£85.2 million) release clause may not be necessary to trigger a move. Reports dating back to October suggest that a fee of €60-70 million (£51.1m-59.6m) could be sufficient due to a verbal agreement with the player.
“As long ago as October, it’s been stated that €60-70million (£51.1m-59.6m) will be enough for Gyokeres to leave.”
Mikel Arteta is said to believe the Swedish international “fits perfectly” into his tactical setup. A powerful, intelligent forward with technical ability and a ruthless eye for goal, Gyokeres’ style would mesh well with Arsenal’s fluid attacking midfield — particularly with creators like Ødegaard and Saka feeding him.
Timing in transfer strategy is everything. Arsenal’s front-footed move not only reflects their ambition but demonstrates a clear plan to avoid losing out on another top target. Last summer’s market showed how quickly the value of key players can inflate once multiple clubs become involved.

Given Manchester United, Chelsea, and even Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with a new No.9 this summer, Arsenal’s early play might prove to be pivotal. This bid may not meet the official release clause, but the groundwork has seemingly been laid. If Gyokeres’ verbal agreement is honoured, the Gunners could close the deal before the transfer window explodes into full chaos.
Arsenal’s most glaring issue this season has been a lack of consistent firepower up top. Despite Kai Havertz’s improved form, his tally of just nine goals pales in comparison to the division’s top scorers.
“Arsenal’s top scorer this season is Kai Havertz with nine.”
Compare that with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (28 goals), and the gap becomes painfully clear. The need for a reliable 20+ goals-a-season striker is more urgent than ever. Viktor Gyokeres could be the man to bridge that gap — and help Arsenal finally get over the line in a title race they’ve flirted with but not quite conquered.
From a Gooner’s perspective, this is exactly the kind of bold move we’ve been crying out for. Arsenal have been so close — painfully close — to Premier League glory in recent seasons. But we all know what’s been missing: a ruthless striker. Not since the days of peak Robin van Persie have we had a proper bagsman who can carry the team over the line.
This reported move for Viktor Gyokeres feels exciting — and serious. 52 goals in one season is unreal at any level, and he’s not just a poacher either. He’s mobile, strong, and technically gifted — the kind of all-rounder who could thrive under Arteta. It’s encouraging to see that the club is trying to get in early and not sleepwalk into another missed opportunity.
If Edu and Arteta can close this deal around £60 million, that’s smart business. With the creative talent we have — Saka, Ødegaard, Martinelli — Gyokeres could hit the ground running. And with City always lurking, we simply can’t afford another season of waiting for Havertz or Jesus to become that killer No.9.
This could be the piece that completes the puzzle. Arsenal fans should be buzzing — this is a statement of intent, and if it comes off, the Premier League better watch out.
