Arsenal are considering a move to sign Jonathan David on a free transfer from Lille next summer.

David is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and has emerged as an option for Arsenal as the Gunners look to sign a striker. Mikel Arteta wants to add a recognised number nine to his squad but failed to do so in the summer transfer window.

According to CaughtOffside, the North Londoners are now looking at David, whose expiring contract makes him an appealing option.

The 24-year-old has scored 87 goals in 192 appearances since signing for Lille from Gent and helped Canada reach the Copa America semi-finals on their tournament debut in the summer. David is also Canada’s joint-highest scorer of all time having netted 29 goals in 56 caps.

David has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs of late, including Chelsea, Aston Villa, West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur, as he approaches the end of his current deal.

The Canadian has been open in his desire to test himself in English football previously, though has not ruled out signing a contract extension at Lille.

Arsenal striker target opens up on future

“Well, right now we’re speaking with the (Lille President Oliver Letang) about a possible extension. We’ll see how that goes,” he told The Athletic earlier this month.

“I’m open to anything. I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”
