The transfer market always leaves surprises, unexpected moves and decisions that generate debate. This time, the spotlight is on north London. After several weeks without much news in the Arsenal goal, the club have activated an operation that has surprised more than one.

The Gunners had long been looking for a goalkeeper who could offer guarantees from the bench, especially after a demanding season in which the need for depth in the squad was exposed. Now, with a full calendar of domestic and European commitments, the London club are looking to strengthen a key position.

Arsenal Close To Finalising Move For Kepa Arrizabalaga

According to David Ornstein, journalist for the New York Times, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Kepa Arrizabalaga to sign him this summer. The goalkeeper, who still belongs to Chelsea, has reportedly been given the green light for his transfer, which is in its final stages. The Emirates club will pay a £5million release clause, a low figure considering the player’s track record. The 30-year-old Kepa comes with a wealth of experience in both Premier League and European competitions. The deal will be finalised soon, and he is expected to join the team before the start of pre-season.

Good Move For The Gunners?

From a purely sporting perspective, the move makes sense. Kepa failed to establish himself as an undisputed starter at Chelsea, but he showed flashes of quality at times. His best version, undoubtedly, was seen at Athletic Club. There the Spaniard showed reflexes, security in goal and was good with the ball at his feet. At Arsenal he won’t be a starter, but he will fill a vital role as second-choice goalkeeper, ready to compete when Raya is unavailable. With so many games on the horizon, Arteta needs reliability in every corner of the squad. Kepa can offer that, and his experience in high-pressure situations is a valuable asset.

Plus, the price is affordable. Today, a goalkeeper of his level, for just five million, is perceived as an opportunity rather than a gamble. Arsenal are not committing huge money and are getting a player with international experience, which adds weight to the dressing room. Some will say it is an unnecessary arrival if you have two strong goalkeepers, but in a long season any injury or dip in form can alter plans. Whatever the case, Kepa lands in London with a new opportunity and a lot to prove.
