Arne Slot is reportedly making a ‘frantic’ attempt to sign one of his former Feyenoord players for Liverpool. But he might be too late.

De Telegraaf reports that Arne Slot wants to sign Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord this month. However, his attempts to do so have become 'frantic' in light of Brighton securing a verbal agreement over a transfer.

The Seagulls have a £25m offer on the table, with 'large' bonuses taking that higher. That's an agreement with Feyenoord if it isn't clear - Brighton are nearing a transfer here.

What could stop them is an offer from Liverpool. They Reds and their new head coach are pushing to get involved in talks but if they don't get serious soon, Wieffer will almost certainly take the offer from Brighton.

Conflicting reports

Feyenoord site 1908.nl offer a conflicting report, however. They claim that Liverpool are not a concrete option for Wieffer. The use of the word 'concrete' suggests there is something in the way of interest but not enough for the player to consider the Reds against Brighton.

And that's probably closer to the truth here. Wieffer isn't a name that's been linked with Liverpool, nor is he of the profile that the Reds would suddenly make a 'frantic' push to get him.

If he was a player they were that eager to sign, we imagine the deal would have been wrapped up by now. After all, the Slot connection makes this one an easy win and Wieffer would almost certainly have it put to him that Liverpool were desperate to sign him.

In other words, a deal with Brighton wouldn't be close - both Feyenoord and Wieffer would be waiting to hear from Anfield before even verbally agreeing anything.

No one should entirely rule out the idea of Liverpool making a last-gasp attempt to get Wieffer but we're not going to hold our breath on this one.
