Inter captain Lautaro Martinez got his first goal for the Nerazzurri in almost two months yesterday.

The sense of relief was palpable after the 27-year-old stuck the ball into the back of the net.

Martinez’s lack of goals has become a real talking point in the last few weeks. And that has been a worry for Inter.

But at the same time, Martinez’s overall performances have hardly been bad.

It’s hard to ignore a lack of scoring when a player is a striker. Particularly when they have been Inter’s top scorer for each of the past three seasons.

But Martinez has certainly marked himself out as a player who can make a big contribution even when he is not getting himself onto the scoresheet.

Inter Captain Lautaro Martinez: “We Strikers Are The First Defenders”

After yesterday’s match, Martinez admitted that “I’ve been waiting a long time for that goal.”

“But the most important thing is that the team wins,” the Inter captain made clear.

“My teammates are the ones who keep me alive. What matters is what you do for the team.”

Martinez noted that “We strikers are the first defenders.”

“Sometimes the goal just doesn’t come,” the Argentine said. “But today it did, and I’m happy about that.”

“It was a tricky match,” Martinez said of facing Cagliari.

“We found our composure after the first goal. But they could have cause a lot of problems for us.”

“We’re happy because we’re bringing home three important points,” Martinez said. “Right before we play in the Supercoppa.”

“We all work week in week out to do what the coach asks.”

And Martinez gave his thoughts ahead of the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana. Inter face Atalanta in the semifinal next week, and then could face AC Milan or Juventus in the final.

“Like last season, we want to play a great match.”

“We had to get through today’s match. But now we’ll go there and prepare, and celebrate New Year’s Eve together.”

“It will be important for us to consolidate our group in that very tough competition,” Martinez said of the Supercoppa.
