Ange Postecoglou reported that James Maddison’s injury was ‘nothing too serious’ after being clattered in what proved the decisive moment as we toppled Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on Thursday night to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

That moment arrived just before half-time in the second leg of our quarter-final at Deutsche Bank Park. Madders made a clever run in behind, spotted by Cristian Romero, who clipped pass into his path in the penalty area. Madders reached the ball first and was then clattered by goalkeeper Kaua Santos.

A penalty was awarded after a VAR check, tucked away confidently by Dominic Solanke for the only goal of the game, seeing us home 2-1 on aggregate. However, Madders was pole axed. He managed to get back to his feet after treatment but couldn’t continue.

“I think he’s fine,” Ange told Inside Spurs. “I was talking to him after, and he’ll gladly take that. So courageous. I thought the boy was lucky to stay on the pitch, to be honest. It could very easily have been a red card, but it looks like it’s nothing too serious. I’m sure whatever he’s feeling has been numbed by the joy of winning the game!”

Speaking later in his press conference, Ange added: “He is fine. He showed unbelievable courage in that moment to put his body on the line knowing full well that he was going to get a pretty severe knock and I was surprised it wasn’t a red card. Super courageous from him. He is sore but I’m sure that has all been numbed knowing that he has helped us progress to the semi.”
