Known for his agility, composure, and exceptional ball-playing skills, André Onana was born on April 2, 1996 in Nkol Nook in central Cameroon. Onana’s journey from a promising young talent at the Samuel Eto’o Academy to becoming Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper speaks to his dedication, resilience, and excellence.
At 14 years old, Onana left Africa to join FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, where he refined his technical skills and tactical awareness. His breakthrough came in 2015 when he signed with AFC Ajax, making several appearances and securing three Eredivisie titles. His shot-stopping reflexes and confidence in playing out from the back cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s finest goalkeepers.
In 2022, Onana moved to Inter Milan, where he quickly became a key figure, helping the club win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana, while also playing a pivotal role in their 2022-23 UEFA Champions League final run. A year later, he signed with Manchester United, bringing his commanding presence and elite distribution to the Premier League. It hasn’t been all plaudits and roses for Onana at Old Trafford, however, as he also committed some spectacular blunders that cost the team games. His goalkeeping stats have also suffered, conceding 1.5 goals per game with the Red Devils (that was 0.90 at Inter Milan and 1.1 at Ajax).
On the international stage, Onana has earned 42 caps for Cameroon’s national team, representing the Indomitable Lions in the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup. His leadership and shot-stopping brilliance have made him an essential figure for his country.
Many happy returns to you, André Onana!
