Sheffield United have been targeted by an American group as a potential club to buy, according to Alan Nixon.

After what has been a very dire season for the Blades, finally some good news seems to be coming from it.

This summer was poised to be one of major changes in the playing staff, with a multitude of players being moved on or made available.

Prior to the final game of the season, it was announced that Chris Basham, George Baldock, Oliver Norwood, Wes Foderingham and Max Lowe will all leave the club when their contracts expire in the summer.

Norwood already has interest from clubs across the EFL.

As well as the soon-to-be free agents, the likes of Anis Slimane, Benie Traore and Ismaila Coulibaly are all believed to be players who the club will look to move on from this summer. The Blades are also willing to let go of some of their better performing assets, like Vinicius Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic, as per journalist Alan Nixon.

United are also going to try and wash their hands of failed January window signing Ivo Grbic, which, if he were to leave, would leave them without their number one and two choice goalkeepers from the 2023/24 campaign.

Given their defensive record - they conceded more goals last season than any other team in Premier League history - their desire to start fresh, both between the sticks and across the team at large, is fair.

Now, news of a potential takeover at Bramall Lane could make these changes much easier, and sooner.

American interest in Sheffield United

Nixon has reported, via his Patreon, that the state-side group are looking to do a deal quickly, that they would want a return to the Premier League, and that the Blades are a team that they are considering. The club's current owners have been looking to move on from their asset for a while, as per Nixon.

The reported price that they would be looking to get for the club is around £100 million, but the potential bid is expected to be short of that mark.

Nixon added that sources from the club are talking about an imminent deal, and that it will have a big effect on the playing and management staff.

American takeover of Sheffield United would be brilliant for the club

Well over 20 sides in the EFL have some form of American investment in them, whether it be full or partial ownership.

In and of itself, that is some statement, especially given the relative lack of popularity the sport has across the pond compared to the usual favourite pastimes of the USA.

It's done wonders for some clubs, like Crawley Town, most recently - although there was a very wobbly start. There is some risk that comes with any new ownership group, but what it does usually mean is a chance for change.

New owners will want to come in and have things operate in the way that they like them to, which is rarely the way of the previous management.

Not only is a reset on the pitch required, but a freshening up of the entire club could hugely benefit the Blades.
