Ally McCoist has been discussing man of the moment Cole Palmer and gave his reasons as to why he believes the forward isn’t yet world class.

Palmer has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League following his move from Manchester City on deadline day last summer.

The 22-year-old was named Premier League Young Player of the Year in his debut season at Stamford Bridge after he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists as the Blues finished sixth under Mauricio Pochettino.

McCoist believes Palmer isn’t world class

The task facing Palmer this season is whether he can replicate or even better his achievements from last season and his start to the campaign suggests that’s very much possible.

The England international has scored six goals and provided five assists in the first seven league games of the season and despite Chelsea signing the likes of Joao Felix, Pedro Neto and Jadon Sancho this summer it still very much feels like Palmer is the main man.

After his four goal haul against Brighton conversation centred around whether Palmer was world class and the best player in the Premier League currently.

There’s no doubt Palmer is right up there given his incredible achievements in such a short space of time, but McCoist believes the former City man can’t be considered world class just yet.

“Probably or arguably the best player in the league at this moment in time,” he told talkSPORT as quoted by The Chelsea Chronicle.

“Phenomenal goalscoring return and assist. Not done it for long enough, not world-class. It’s about longevity.”

The longevity argument is a fair point, but it’s very hard to argue that Palmer isn’t operating at a world class level right now and he’s currently one of the best players in the world in his position.

Palmer will be hoping to feature for England in their upcoming games against Greece and Finland in the Nations League, and it very much feels like he’s going to be a key player for both England and Chelsea for many years to come.
