One position that Manchester City didn’t strengthen during the January transfer window was at full-back. Kyle Walker departed the club for AC Milan during the January transfer window and it does appear that Pep Guardiola’s squad does lack a quality full-back, especially one that can play at right-back. One player who was heavily linked with a potential move to the Etihad was Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso. Now it seems that every indication is that Manchester City will return in the summer to try and sign Cambiaso.
James Holland has relayed a report from Tuttosport for TeamTalk that Manchester City did find an agreement with Juventus to sign Andrea Cambiaso. Furthermore, Holland’s report indicates that City did agree on a €60 million fee with Juventus to sign the versatile full-back. It is also reported that City had agreed personal terms with Cambiaso. James Holland also reports that City decided to pursue other targets so they didn’t finalise a move for the Italian international. Lastly, Holland reports that it is expected that Manchester City will bid in the summer to sign Andrea Cambiaso from Juventus.
With Manchester City’s rebuild now underway they will be looking to strengthen several positions in the summer. One of those positions will be at full-back. It does appear that Pep Guardiola’s squad could do with signing both a left and a right-back. But where City’s potential move for Cambiaso does make sense is that he can play in both positions. Cambiaso is a versatile player and he does appear to be suited to playing in a Pep Guardiola side. His technical ability is superb and you can see why Manchester City are interested in signing Cambiaso.
Manchester City will enter the final stages of the 24/25 season with a makeshift look to the right-back position. Matheus Nunes has been preferred at the position in recent games. You can’t fault his workrate and effort but it stands out in his play that Nunes isn’t a right-back by trade. City’s other option in the position is Rico Lewis. Lewis started the season strongly but his form has dropped as the season has progressed. The hope is that both players can do the job in the role during the last part of this season. But long term, Manchester City must sign a full-back, especially a right-back. You get the sense that Nunes and Lewis aren’t City’s long-term solution in the role.
That’s where a Manchester City move for Andrea Cambiaso makes sense. He will immediately improve Pep Guardiola’s squad. He could make the right-back position his own and he could also give Josko Gvardiol the rest he needs at left-back. All indications are that City will move for Cambiaso in the summer. Looking at Manchester City’s squad you can see that it’s a move that they simply must make.
