The reigning Ballon d’Or winner missed Spain’s 3-1 victory over Japan on Friday.

She did not train with the Spain squad on Thursday and was taken to a hospital in Madrid on Friday.

It was discovered that the 27-year-old was being treated for viral meningitis – a concern for Spain just days before the start of Euro 2025.

Bonmati was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. However, it was too late for her to travel with the Spain squad who also set off for Switzerland on the same day.

The Spanish Football Federation have revealed that Bonmati will travel to Switzerland “in the coming days”.

Aitana Bonmati has posted a picture on social media from when she was in the hospital in Madrid.

She appeared to be in good spirits despite the setback ahead of Euro 2025. The Barcelona star raised her thumb up to the camera indicating that she was okay.

Bonmati also confirmed this in a message to her fans which accompanied the photo.

She wrote: “Thanks to everyone for the messages I’ve received and to those who have helped me these past few days.

“Fortunately, everything is going well. I hope to be back soon.”

Will Aitana Bonmati be ready for Spain’s Women’s Euro 2025 opener?

Aitana Bonmati is a doubt for Spain’s Euro 2025 opener against Portugal on Thursday, July 3rd.

According to the NHS, viral meningitis is less serious than the rarer bacterial meningitis. It’s said that it tends to get better on its own within seven to 10 days and can often be treated at home.

Spain’s Euro 2025 fixture with Portugal is exactly a week after she missed training last Thursday. With Bonmati yet to travel to Switzerland three days before the start of the tournament it appears unlikely she will be ready to start Spain’s opening game.

Speaking before Bonmati was discharged, Montse Tome said that ‘deadlines’ for a return can’t be discussed.

She said: ‘Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled. Aitana, for us, is a very important player. We will wait for her as long as we can.

“The information I have told you is what I have and I am not going to explain more, if I said something more I would be wrong.”

If Bonmati is not ready to play Portugal, Tome will hope to have the Ballon d’Or winner back in time for the Group B fixtures with Belgium on July 7th, and Italy on July 11th.

Spain are the favourites to win Euro 2025 according to the best betting sites in the UK.

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and can be serious if not treated quickly.

Bonmati was being treated for viral meningitis which is considered less severe than the bacterial form.

Viral meningitis typically resolves on its own with supportive care. Bacterial meningitis is a more serious infection that requires antibiotic treatment.
