ACL2020: verso l’inedita finale fra Ulsan Hyundai e Persepolis | OneFootball

Siamo giunti quasi alla fine di questo 2020 del calcio asiatico e sabato 19 dicembre vi sarà l’ultimo grande appuntamento con l’inedita finale della AFC Champions League fra Ulsan Hyundai e Persepolis.

Siamo dunque giunti all’atto conclusivo di questo 2020 che è stato pesantemente condizionato dal covid, tanto che la Champions League si è disputata nella bolla del Qatar in maniera totalmente asimmetrica fra est ed ovest, con una formula ridotta dato che le gare ad eliminazione diretta non prevedevano la classifica formula di andata e ritorno. Nel mese di ottobre si è disputata la parte della West Zone, con gli iraniani del Persepolis che a sorpresa hanno sbaragliato la concorrenza arrivando in finale. In queste ultime settimane invece abbiamo assistito ai trionfi dell’Ulsan Hyundai che è alla ricerca del riscatto dopo due stagioni davvero terribili.

Le Horang Tigers alla ricerca del riscatto

L’Ulsan Hyundai tornerà sul trono d’Asia dopo il primo successo ottenuto nel 2012, oppure diventerà il Bayer Leverkusen d’Asia perdendo all’ultimo tutti i trofei?

La stagione 2019 per la squadra coreana si era chiusa con un incubo, ovvero con la perdita del titolo nazionale all’ultima giornata con uno scivolone per 4-1 contro il Pohang Steelers che ha permesso al Jeonbuk di effettuare il sorpasso in classifica. Questo 2020 è stato altrettanto tragico: le Horang Tigers in più occasioni hanno avuto l’opportunità di portarsi a +7 sul Jeonbuk ma non hanno mai approfittato dei passi falsi degli avversari che sono riusciti a rimontare vincendo tutti e tre gli scontri diretti in campionato, incluso quello alla penultima giornata che di fatto ha decretato l’ennesimo successo della K-League.

Ma per l’Ulsan Hyundai le delusioni non finiscono qui, dato che subito dopo la fine del campionato le Horang Tigers devono capitolare ancora, questa volta nel doppio confronto della finale della FA Cup, sempre contro il Jeonbuk.

Per Junior Negao (capocannoniere della K-League con 26 gol) e compagni la delusione è stata immensa e l’unico modo per riscattare questi due anni assolutamente atroci vi è un solo modo: quello di vincere la Champions League. Con una difesa estremamente solida guidata dall’olandese Dave Bulthuis che ha concesso solo 6 gol in tutta la competizione, ed un attacco devastante con un grandissimo del continente come Junior Negao ed il dinamismo di Yoon Bit-Garam (oltre all’apporto di Bjorn Johnson dalla panchina), l’Ulsan ha sbaragliato la concorrenza dominando il girone e battendo per 2-0 ai quarti di finale l’avversario più quotato, il Beijing Guoan.

In una semifinale estremamente combattuta contro il Vissel Kobe, l’Ulsan Hyundai ha prevalso per 2-1 ai tempi supplementari grazie al rigore trasformato al 119′ proprio da Junior Negao.

Ora vi è l’ennesimo appuntamento con la storia per l’Ulsan Hyundai: riuscirà la squadra coreana a riscattarsi oppure diventerà il Bayer Leverkusen d’Asia, perdendo all’ultimo tutte e tre la manifestazioni?

La grande incognita del Persepolis

L’avversario dell’Ulsan Hyundai sarà il Persepolis, compagine sempre temibile ma che non ci saremmo mai aspettati di vedere in finale, soprattutto dopo che, prima della ripresa della Champions, l’attaccante Ali Alipour ed il portiere Alireza Beiranvand hanno lasciato il club per trasferirsi in Europa.

Eppure, proprio come nel 2018, il Persepolis (quattro volte consecutive campione d’Iran), si è preso lo scalpo di avversari decisamente più quotati, nella fattispecie, i campioni di Qatar dell’Al Duhail, i campioni d’Uzbekistan del Pakhtakor Taskhent ed i campioni uscenti d’Arabia Saudita dell’Al Nassr del grande cannoniere Abderazak Hamdallah. Un grande risultato raggiunto grazie alle reti di Alekasir e a grande dinamismo di Shoja e Mehdi Torabi.

Eppure nessuno di questi tre elementi sarà disponibile per la finale, in quanto Alekasir indisponibile, mentre Shoja e Torabi hanno lasciato il Persepolis per trasferirsi in Qatar ed accettare le ricche offerte dei loro nuovi club. Eppure la squadra allenata da Golmohammadi sarà un avversario tostissimo ed impenetrabile: nelle quattro giornate della stagione 2020/21 da poco cominciata il Persepolis in quattro giornate ha conquistato 8 punti, frutto di due vittorie ed altrettanti pareggi e non ha mai concesso gol.

Il Persepolis, che certo non è stato a secco di trofei in questi ultimi anni a livello locale, è alla ricerca di quel titolo continentale che non è mari arrivato nella sua storia: i rossi di Tehran nel 2018 sono giunti in finale come già menzionato, ma si sono dovuti arrendere ai giapponesi del Kashima Antlers.

Dunque appuntamento al 19 dicembre, per questo storico appuntamento: la finale della AFC Champions League 2020 fra gli iraniani del Persepolis ed i coreani dell’Ulsan Hyundai.

ACL2020: the final will be between Ulsan Hyundai and Persepolis

We are almost at the end of this 2020 of Asian football and on Sunday 19 December there will be the last big event with the unprecedented final of the AFC Champions League between Ulsan Hyundai and Persepolis.

This is the final act of 2020, which has been heavily influenced by covid, with the Champions League being played in the Qatar bubble in a totally asymmetrical manner between east and west, with a reduced formula as the knockout games did not include a return leg. In October, the West Zone was played, with the Iranians of Persepolis surprisingly beating off the competition to reach the final. In recent weeks we have seen the triumphs of Ulsan Hyundai, who are looking for redemption after two terrible seasons.

Horang Tigers looking for redemption

Will Ulsan Hyundai return to the Asian throne after their first success in 2012, or will they become the Bayer Leverkusen of Asia losing all trophies at the last?

The 2019 season for the Korean team had ended with a nightmare, namely the loss of the national title on the last day with a 4-1 slip against the Pohang Steelers that allowed Jeonbuk to overtake them in the standings. This 2020 was just as tragic: the Horang Tigers had the opportunity to go up to +7 on Jeonbuk on more than one occasion, but they never took advantage of the missteps of their adversaries, who managed to come back and win all three league clashes, including the one on the penultimate day, which in fact decreed the umpteenth success of the K-League.

But for Ulsan Hyundai the disappointments did not end there, as soon after the end of the championship the Horang Tigers had to capitulate again, this time in the doubleheader of the FA Cup final, again against Jeonbuk.

For Junior Negao (top scorer of the K-League with 26 goals) and his mates the disappointment was immense and the only way to redeem these two absolutely atrocious years was to win the Champions League. With an extremely solid defence led by Dutchman Dave Bulthuis who only conceded 6 goals in the entire competition, and a devastating attack with a continental great like Junior Negao and the dynamism of Yoon Bit-Garam (as well as the contribution of Bjorn Johnson from the bench), Ulsan routed the competition by dominating the group and beating their most important opponent, Beijing Guoan, 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

In a hard-fought semi-final against Vissel Kobe, Ulsan Hyundai prevailed 2-1 in extra time after Junior Negao scored a penalty in the 119th minute.

Ulsan Hyundai now have yet another appointment with history: will the Korean team be able to redeem themselves or will they become the Bayer Leverkusen of Asia, losing all three events at the last minute?

The great unknown of Persepolis

Ulsan Hyundai’s opponent will be Persepolis, an always fearsome team but one that we never expected to see in the final, especially after striker Ali Alipour and goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand left the club before the resumption of the Champions League to move to Europe.

And yet, just as in 2018, Persepolis (four-time consecutive champions of Iran), took the scalp of decidedly better-ranked opponents, namely Qatari champions Al Duhail, Uzbek champions Pakhtakor Taskhent and defending Saudi Arabian champions Al Nassr of the great gunner Abderazak Hamdallah. A great result achieved thanks to Alekasir’s goals and great dynamism from Shoja and Mehdi Torabi.

Yet none of these three elements will be available for the final, as Alekasir is unavailable, while Shoja and Torabi have left Persepolis to move to Qatar and accept the rich offers of their new clubs. Yet the Golmohammadi-coached team will be a tough and impenetrable opponent: in the four days of the recently started 2020/21 season, Persepolis have picked up eight points in four days, the result of two wins and as many draws, and have never conceded a goal.

Persepolis, who have certainly not been short of trophies in recent years at local level, are looking for the continental title that has not yet arrived in their history: the reds from Tehran reached the final in 2018, as already mentioned, but had to surrender to the Japanese Kashima Antlers.

So the appointment is set for 19 December, for this historic event: the final of the 2020 AFC Champions League between the Iranians of Persepolis and the Koreans of Ulsan Hyundai.
