AC Milan kick off their Serie A campaign against newly-promoted Cremonese on Saturday at San Siro.
Both sides will be searching for a positive start to the season, with Milan looking to bounce back from last season’s disappointing eighth-place finish under new coach Massimiliano Allegri.
Milan could hand a league debut to new signing Luka Modric, with the 39-year-old Croatian joining on a free transfer from Real Madrid. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner brings vast European experience to a Milan squad desperate to return to Champions League football.
Massimiliano Allegri has bolstered his squad with several summer acquisitions including Samuele Ricci from Torino, Pervis Estupiñán from Brighton, and Ardon Jashari from Club Brugge. Victor Boniface is close to completing a loan move from Bayer Leverkusen but won’t be available for this fixture.
Rafael Leao is ruled out with a calf injury sustained during the 2-0 Coppa Italia win over Bari, while Samuel Chukwueze has recovered from a minor muscle problem and returns to training. Noah Okafor has completed his transfer to Leeds United.
The Grigiorossi return to Serie A after securing promotion via the Serie B play-offs, defeating Spezia 3-2 on aggregate in the final. Davide Nicola’s side have made several loan acquisitions from Milan, including Warren Bondo and Filippo Terracciano.
Goalkeeper Lapo Nava has joined from AC Milan Futuro on a free transfer, while Alberto Grassi arrives from Empoli to strengthen the midfield. Alessio Zerbin joins on loan from Napoli to provide pace on the flanks.
Allegri’s return has brought renewed optimism to San Siro after a disastrous previous campaign that saw Milan finish eighth and miss European qualification entirely.
The Rossoneri impressed in pre-season, recording a 4-2 win over Premier League champions Liverpool and a commanding 9-0 victory against Perth Glory. Their season began positively with a 2-0 Coppa Italia victory over Bari, with Christian Pulisic among the scorers.
After earning promotion through the Serie B play-offs, Cremonese have endured a difficult start to the new campaign. They were eliminated from the Coppa Italia first round by Palermo, losing on penalties following a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. The newly-promoted side will be eager to make their mark on their Serie A return.
AC Milan: Maignan; Tomori, Gabbia, Pavlovic; Saelemaekers, Fofana, Modric, Loftus-Cheek, Estupiñán; Pulisic, Giménez.
