Former Milan defender Ignazio Abate was sacked and then re-hired by Serie C side Ternana following a reported row with the senior hierarchy over his decision to leave the President’s son off the club’s squad list.
Abate, who made over 300 appearances for Milan before coaching the U16s and Primavera side after hanging up his boots, was appointed as head coach of Ternana after leaving the Rossoneri youth sector over the summer.
Ternana currently sit in second place in Serie C’s Group B after 25 matches, three points off the division’s leaders, Virtus Entella.
Despite a strong start to the 2024-25 season, Abate was sacked and then re-hired almost immediately over a reported row involving the President and his son, who is on the club’s books.
According to local reports, quoted by Calciomercato.com, the coach was initially fired by Ternana for not including Mattya D’Alessandro on the squad list. The player in question is the son of the club’s President.
There had reportedly been an agreement to allow the 20-year-old D’Alessandro to go out on loan to gain experience at senior level, but that didn’t happen and briefly cost Abate his job.
Ternana confirmed the sacking and that Fabio Liverani would come in as the replacement at around 20.00 local time on Thursday night.
However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the players called for an emergency meeting with the club’s senior management and the former coach, and around three hours later, Abate came out as the head coach of Ternana again.
