The Liga MX Clausura 2025 final between Club América and Toluca drew a record-breaking television audience in Mexico, as football fans tuned in nationwide to watch Toluca halt América’s bid for a fourth consecutive league title. According to newly released ratings data, the broadcast amassed an audience of 24.2 million viewers, surpassing previous benchmarks for televised football matches in the country.

Both Televisa and TV Azteca, who shared live transmission rights for the match, saw significant interest, but Televisa edged ahead in viewership. Of the total audience, an additional 242,000 viewers—equal to around 1% of the total—opted for Televisa’s coverage over its competitor. The final was offered across multiple platforms, with open-air broadcasting on Canal 5, cable coverage via TUDN, and the Azteca 7 feed capturing a broad cross-section of the Mexican public.

The scale of interest can be attributed to several key factors. América, having reached their fourth straight final, were chasing an unprecedented run of league success, sparking considerable curiosity over whether they could achieve a historic “tetracampeonato.” The neutral venue at Toluca’s ground contributed as well, with many América supporters unable to attend in person and instead choosing to follow the action on television.

Presenters also played their part in driving engagement. TV Azteca’s coverage featured Christian Martinoli, renowned for his openly expressed support of Toluca, delivering an impassioned and emotional narration that resonated with large sections of the audience. Despite this, Televisa’s feed remained the marginally preferred option.

This final eclipsed even the most-watched non-sporting event of the previous year, topping the 21.5 million viewers registered by the last edition of “La Casa de los Famosos.” It also establishes a new watermark for televised football in Mexico, as no previous domestic final has drawn such a substantial viewing figure.

The arrangement of simulcasting the final on multiple free-to-air channels is not unprecedented, though it remains rare. The first instance came during the 2017 Apertura final, when Monterrey and Tigres faced off at the Estadio BBVA with broadcast rights likewise divided.

While the match in Toluca ended América’s title streak, it delivered a clear statement on the continued pulling power of Mexican football—and América in particular—attracting nationwide attention regardless of the club’s fate. For now, the numbers reinforce the enduring stature of football’s marquee moments on Mexican television.
