On June 20, the Council of Ministers approved a decree law that will revolutionize the world of football.

The duration of contracts has been modified with implications for the budgets of clubs.

As reported by Corriere dello Sport, the maximum duration of contracts goes from five years to eight.

The law states that: “In article 11 of the draft Decree, at point 4), letter b), it is written that “in article 26, paragraph 2, first period [of Legislative Decree no. 36/2021 ed.], the word «five», is replaced by the following «eight»”.

The rule, introduced in 1981 and then reformed in 2021, will change after the promulgation of the President of the Republic, when the Decree will come into force bringing radical changes to the transfer market.

This will allow clubs to protect their assets, namely the players who after two or three years must already negotiate for the renewal.

This new law will have implications on the balance sheets of clubs, in fact this will reduce the annual amortization installments and thus allow them to increase investments.

Now FIFA will also have to intervene and modify the rule on the protection of contracts in light of these changes.
