Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, James Trafford and Rayan Cherki all made their Premier League debuts for Manchester City in their 4-nil win over Wolves yesterday. Each player showed what they will add to Pep Guardiola’s squad this season. In the case of Tijjani Reijnders, the Dutch international had the perfect Premier League debut for his new team. Reijnders added something different to Pep Guardiola’s side with his drive and attacking threat from midfield. It was a superb performance from the Dutch international, which has laid down a marker for what he is capable of as a Manchester City player.
There was little doubt that Tijjani Reijnders was the man-of-the-match in Manchester City’s win over Wolves yesterday. He scored, grabbed an assist, and it was his run that set up Manchester City’s opening goal of yesterday’s match. Those contributions only tell part of the impact Reijnders made yesterday.
What the Dutch international added was life and energy to Manchester City’s midfield. Alongside Nico, Reijnders helped Pep Guardiola’s side win the midfield battle. Up against Andre and Joao Gomes, Reijnders and Nico, with help from John Stones and Rico Lewis, Manchester City dictated yesterday’s match from midfield. Straight away, it stood out what qualities Reijnders adds to City’s midfield. With Rodri working his way back to full fitness, this Manchester City squad is better prepared to cover Rodri’s absence.
Going forward, Tijjani Reijnders added exactly what Manchester City’s midfield lacked last season. The Dutch international is a weapon going forward. His run to play through Rico Lewis to set up Erling Haaland’s first goal of the game was superb. His run and finish from Oscar Bobb’s through ball for City’s second goal oozed quality. Reijnders then combined with Oscar Bobb and Erling Haaland to put the game to bed in the second half. All told, Reijnders had the perfect Premier League debut yesterday.
It was clear during Manchester City’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign that Tijjani Reijnders was the perfect fit for this Manchester City squad. The Dutch international showed yesterday that he is ready for the Premier League and has the capacity to dominate and dictate matches. He made the ideal debut in the Premier League at Molineux and he looms as a pivotal player for Pep Guardiola’s side next season.
