With the FA Cup’s third-round, return of the Bundesliga, and a Spanish Super Cup to savour, there’s some unmissable football on this weekend.
Here are our five must-watch games.
The FA Cup’s third round has thrown up some real David vs Goliath games, with Liverpool’s lunchtime date with Accrington Stanley on Saturday a classic cup contest.
Fourth-tier Accrington have been the butt of jokes ever since a 1980s milk advert that became a cultural phenomenon. The iconic line from a young Liverpool fan “Accrington Stanley – who are they?” and his friend’s reply “Exactly!” has followed the Lancashire side ever since.
Accrington, under the management of Evertonian John Doolan, now have the chance to claim an almighty upset against the Premier League and Champions League leaders.
There will be few football fans, anywhere, who do not know the name Accrington if the League Two strugglers pull it off.
Tottenham travel to Tamworth to take on the lowest-ranked side in the FA Cup third round this weekend.
The Lambs sit 16th in the fifth tier but have beat League One opposition in Huddersfield Town and Burton Albion to reach this stage. It is just the fourth time in their 91-year history that Tamworth have reached round three and their reward is a money-spinning tie against the eight-time winners.
Ange Postecoglou’s side will travel to the 4,963-capacity Lamb Ground, where they will be greeted by Tom Tonks and a giant throw-in. Amid wintery conditions and Tottenham’s depleted defence, this has all the makings of a classic upset.
The Bundesliga is back and Friday night football features a huge clash at the Westfalenstadion.
Borussia Dortmund host the champions, aiming to wrestle a route back into the top four. Nuri Sahin’s side have struggled for consistency, winning just one in five before the break.
Leverkusen sit four points behind Bayern Munich in the title race and found real form before the winter pause. Xabi Alonso will be hoping the break has not halted the momentum of last season’s double winners, who can put the pressure on Bayern with a win.
Mikel Arteta has called Arsenal’s clash with Manchester United a ‘beautiful game’ as the two most successful sides in FA Cup history meet in the third round. Sure, it’s hardly the kind of potential giant-killing occasion the third round can bring but there’s plenty of history between these two in this competition.
Who can forget Ryan Giggs’ glorious goal in the 1999 semi-final? Or Patrick Vieira’s last kick in an Arsenal shirt to win the Gunners the cup six years later?
History favours Arsenal heading into this one. The North Londoners have eliminated the reigning FA Cup holders in each of the last six occasions they’ve faced them.
All eyes will be on Jeddah this weekend ahead of a Spanish Super Cup El Clásico.
Real Madrid and Barcelona each navigated semi-finals to reach the decider, with the former capable of matching Barcelona’s record of 14 titles. The Catalans crushed Real Madrid 4-0 in the league meeting between the teams earlier in the campaign but the form table has flipped since then.
Barcelona won just one of their last five La Liga games before the winter break, while Real Madrid have found form to overtake them in the table. The stage is set for another cracking Clásico.
