Billy Sharp is among other things 39. To wish Billy Sharp a Happy Birthday here is a list of Billy Sharp’s best 39 goals (in my opinion, which will undoubtedly be wrong).

39. His first Blades goals vs. Morecambe in the EFL Cup

This one is a bit of a cheat. I know so early on including two goals in one. But in typical Billy fashion once he got one another poured in. They’ve been like metaphorical London buses ever since.

OneFootball Video

The first was played in by the great Luton Shelton who controlled the ball perfectly to assist Sharp to opening the scoring on the 18th minute. His second on the 33rd was a thunderous strike going in off the bar. Ultimately, Shelton also bagged a brace with Lee Hendrie scoring the fourth in between, as the Blades won 5-0 in the Carling Cup.

38. Goal vs Barnsley 22 March 2008

A long ball forward found Sharp just outside of Barnsley’s penalty area. With just one touch Billy beat a crowd of three players opened himself up and with his right foot scored into the far corner.

His celebration saw away fans burst out of the stand and so Billy in green ended up celebrating with South Yorkshire Police. His goal on the 77th minute also guaranteed the three points. Probably why Luke Steele is laid on the floor with his head in his hands.

37. Third Goal vs QPR 16 August 2008

The goal that secured Sharp his first Sheffield United hat-trick. A corner was put in by Michael Tonge. After a goal-line scramble and despite half of QPR’s team on the line. Sharp managed to wrestle the ball into the back of the net.

Don’t worry the first two will appear in the list later.

36. First League Goal of Third Spell vs Blackpool

A Blades corner across the floor found Sharp just inside the penalty area unmarked. All he had to do was hit it towards the goal and celebrate in front of the Kop. Perhaps, not the most difficult but a trademark Sharp finish and an announcement that the Boyhood Blade was back.

35. Goal vs Bradford 20 September 2015

A long ball forward from Jose Baxter from inside the Blades half saw Sharp earn the Blades a point. His equaliser to make it two-two was a result of an excellent chest to head touch then down to his feet. Before an initial save saw Billy score the rebound.

34. Goal vs Hull City 2021

Ball played down the right-hand side of the box by George Baldock, to Morgan Gibbs-White, a powerful header at the back post. A familiar goal for those watching in 2021-2022. Move started by Baldock, a hint of class from Gibbs-White and Billy Sharp waiting to pounce. The goal also came on his 300th appearance.

33. Goal vs Peterborough 2021

The move starts with Oliver Norwood pinging a ball from the centre. Outwide to Rhys Norrington-Davies on the left. Then to Hourihane on the edge of the box, passing to Norwood, who pings it into a crowded box.

Billy Sharp with his back to goal turns hits the ball on the volley and as he falls to his left the ball fires into the bottom right corner of the Peterborough United net.

32. Goal vs Birmingham 2021

A simple finish from Billy Sharp from six yards running towards the Birmingham goalkeeper. Although, this goal highlighted what made Billy Sharp so good for the Blades his timing and anticipation. Sharp followed a great ball from Sander Berge and finished expertly.

31. Goal Vs Colchester

A long ball from the aptly named Blades No.1 George Long went over every one. As it fired forward from the Blades box all the way to Sharp who ran to the opposing one. He took the ball and wriggled past two defenders to bag the goal.

30. Open Goal vs. Derby

After the long ball vs Colchester comes a counter-attack vs Derby County. The Blades broke away after a Derby corner leaving Enda Stevens to pass the ball to Sharp who scored into an open net. As Scott Carson had gone up for the corner.

29. Goal vs Wilder’s Middlesbrough

Starting with Oliver Norwood winning the ball back well into Middlesbrough’s half. Norwood played the ball forward to Gibbs-White on the left of the box. With MGW tapping it across to Sharp who comfortably finished. With the amount of times they linked up in 2021-2022 you’d think defences would learn. Clearly not. As Sharp and Co. won 4-1 in a return from hell for Wilder. All’s good now though.

28. Shush Goal vs Norwich

Not that one. That’s further down. His second in the game saw Sharp shush Carrow Road. A cross from the right-hand side from Duffy found Sharp at the far post. Where he headed in past Tim Krul to equalise for the Blades. Before wheeling off to celebrate with his finger up to his lips. Still not sure they’ve forgiven him.

27. Penultimate Blades Goal vs. Huddersfield

Billy Sharp’s penultimate Blades goal saw the captain run into the box to chip Huddersfield keeper Lee Nicholls for a consolation. As the Blades lost 2-1 early in the 2022-2023 season.

26. Second goal vs QPR 16 August 2008

Sharp scored brilliantly from just inside the box from an easy finish. The finish was made easy by the long pass from Gary Speed which lobbed the QPR defender and allowed Sharp to do the rest.

25. Goal vs MK Dons before Championship promotion

Carruthers began the move just inside MK Dons half before a ball from Coutts was badly dealt with by George Williams in the MK Dons defence. With Williams playing the ball into Sharp’s path and the United captain rounded the keeper for 2-0.

24. Crucial promotion race goal vs Bolton

Fleck played a pacey ball across the floor towards Billy Sharp, so quick that it went under the foot of the Bolton defender. Before Sharp’s precise finish onto the far post allowed the ball into the back of the net. A crucial goal in February during the League One title race.

23. Iconic celebration goal vs Barnsley

A great move down the left gave Jack O’ Connell the chance for a powerful across the floor ball into the box. Which initially went towards Leon Clarke whose clever decoy left the ball to find Sharp at the back post. With Sharp getting the goal and his infamous goal celebration.

22. Header vs QPR 16 August 2008

Another goal from his first Blades hat-trick. The move started with a Greg Halford long throw into into Henderson who flicked it in for a diving Billy Sharp header. The goal from six yards was his first.

21. Header vs Hull 300th Appearance

The move started with Gibbs-White on the right, with a ball back to Fleck, then to Baldock, who played Gibbs-White back down the right. Gibbs-White floated a ball into the box for a jumping Sharp header to put the ball into the back of the net. On a sunny day at the KCOM.

20. Goal vs. West Brom 2 February 2021

A sensational outside of the foot finish from Sharp in the box at a pandemic-emptied Kop end helped the Blades get a rare 2020-2021 victory. At the time in February it was an important three points gained against relegation rivals.

19. PL Goal vs Bournemouth at Bramall Lane

Not that one. But still a good one. We’ll get to his first Premier League goal later. In the 46th minute from an Enda Stevens cross. Billy Sharp did what he does best a back post finish in a crowded box. Making a goal in both fixtures against the Cherries that season.

I bet Billy enjoyed facing Ramsdale in training the season after.

18. Goal from distance vs Shrewsbury

If it a higher level this one would be remembered greatly. Daniel Lafferty played the ball for Sharp from just inside Shrewsbury’s half. For Sharp to turn outside of the box to from looking at it float the ball gracefully into the top corner.

He’s not just a close up finisher you know.

17. Diving header vs Norwich 7 March 2020

Just before the COVID pandemic, Billy Sharp had time for one more goal. During the Blades excellent 2019-2020 form. Sharp was found by Chris Basham who put in a cross from deep.

Where Sharp leaped like a Salmon (for clarity the fish kind not the Scottish striker) and almost like a thrown dart powered the ball into the net with a superb diving header.

16. Goal and Cartwheel vs Oldham

This is in 16th because the unthinkable happened a cartwheel from Billy Sharp. A ball over the top from Mark Duffy found Billy Sharp for the first time volley beating the keeper at his near post.

Billy himself knew this was a good one as he broke out the cartwheel before being mobbed by his teammates.

15. Goal vs. Bradford 28 December 2015

From distance Sharp scored with a pinpoint finish into the right-hand bottom corner of the goal at Bramall Lane. As the Blades entered 2016 with a 3-1 victory. Joining him on the scoresheet was Connor Sammon and David Edgar.

14. 100th League Goal for Blades vs Newcastle

Billy Sharp scored his 100th League goal for Sheffield United from the penalty spot. In a rare 2020-2021 win for the Blades in the Premier League.

13. Goal for Hecky’s first win

At a snowy Bramall Lane, Sharp got Paul Heckingbottom’s start to life as Blades permanent boss off to a great start.

McGoldrick played the ball to Bogle as the snow began to settle. Bogle played the ball inside before a pass found McGoldrick down the right. For McGoldrick to assist with a low cross for Sharp to fire the ball past the helpless Robins keeper.

12. Header vs. Nottingham Forest 4 March 2022

Morgan Gibbs-White played the ball to Ben Osborn out on the right. Osborn played the ball back to Gibbs-White who sent a great cross from distance to the back-post. Where Sharp rose the highest to head the ball into the back of the net. Another exceptional Gibbs-White assist for a Sharp goal.

11. Goal vs. Norwich 18 August 2018

In the 93rd minute with the score at 1-1. Chris Basham puts a looping ball over the Norwich right-back finding the end of McGoldrick’s boot. With Didzy tapping onto the floor where it bobbles up for a Sharp header.

The goal was so impressive and the celebrations so good that Dean Henderson ran the length of the pitch. To join in the celebrations under the Kop.

10. Goal past Raya vs. Blackburn 29 Dec 2018

The current Arsenal number one may want to look away for this one. After an unlikely penalty shout for Blackburn. Enda Stevens began a counter-attack by launching the ball forward to Sharp allowed the ball to land in front of him before expertly beating Raya. With Sharp contributing two goals to the Blades 3-0 win.

9. Final League Goal for the Blades vs Wigan

Rather fittingly given Wigan were the team where Sharp became the top English League goal-scorer of the 21st Century. Wigan on 19 December 2022 were the last team Sharp scored against in the league for the Blades.

His 56th minute goal started when Norwood got the ball back just inside Wigan’s half. A forward pass to the edge of the box found Ndiaye. Ndiaye passed to his left allowing Sharp to finish past the Wigan keeper into the far bottom corner. One last great finish, made to look simple by one of the best finishers to ever do it.

8. Header vs. Leeds

Sharp opened the scoring at Elland Road on the 2nd minute. After a George Baldock throw to Leon Clarke who backheeled to Mark Duffy who crossed it to Sharp. With Sharp finishing with an easy header at the backpost.

7. Goal Vs. Bristol City 6th May 2018

The move started with Fleck just inside United’s half. Then United’s number four sprinting into Bristol City’s half chipped the ball over the Robins’ defence. Where on the first-time volley, Sharp sent his strike into the roof of the Ashton Gate net. Described on commentary as an “absolute blockbuster!”

6. 200th EFL Goal vs Leeds

A cross from Duffy, pinged off a Leeds defender to fall into the path of Billy Sharp. Sharp stood centrally in the box with his back to goal put his all behind the ball. With his volley then ending up in the roof of the net!

If not for more important or iconic career goals it could be right up there. Especially given it was his 200th EFL Goal of his career.

5. First PL goal vs Bournemouth

When this goal went in. I was on a boat in Italy and to say the last minute nature nearly made me drop my phone in the lake is apt.

With the Blades 1-0 down to Bournemouth who to get the equaliser towards the end of the game. But one Billy Sharp. Not a bad way to get your first Premier League goal.

4. Socking Celebration Vs. Norwich City

Promised since number 29 on the list. After Enda Stevens was felled in the Norwich box. Sharp stepped up firing the subsequent penalty into the right top corner. Before placing a sock onto his hand. With the sock ending up theatrically in the late George Baldock’s mouth. Rest in Peace GB.

3. Goal vs. Wrexham FA Cup

This one ruffled some feathers. Sharp’s goal in 90+4 in front of the Kop giving the Blades the lead. A finish only he could make look simple inside the box, scoring delicately into the far bottom corner. Before Sander Berge’s goal wrapped up the Blades place in the next round.

The goal and Sharp’s post-match interview proved that even in his final season he could make the headlines. Plus, just how much of a Blade, Billy is on and off the pitch.

2. 100th Blades Goal vs Aston Villa 8th Feb 2019

The move started by George Baldock, passing to Kieran Dowell saw Gary Madine head the ball onto the right-hand post. Just as it look like Kalinic had kept it out, Sharp pounced getting the ball over the line with his studs.

The less said about the rest of the game the better.

1. Goal vs Wigan New Year’s Day 2019

A 220th league goal for Billy Sharp saw him become the leading English-born goal-scorer during the 21st century on New Year’s Day against Wigan Athletic.

The move started in the Blades half with a backheel from Sharp to Duffy who passed to Cranie. After a failed pass to Norwood, Cranie composed himself to pass to Duffy who gave it to Baldock to McGoldrick on the right side of the box. McGoldrick’s ball to the edge of the area found Sharp to score to make it 3-0 and break the record.
