Fulham take on Newcastle United this Saturday.
A 3pm kick-off at Craven Cottage.
Fulham with an indifferent start to the season, with five points from a possible twelve in the Premier League so far.
That indifferent start then taking a huge blow on Tuesday night, with Fulham exiting one of the two domestic cup competitions to lower league opposition.
Marco Silva took a calculated risk ahead of the Newcastle United match, changing his entire team for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup game from the eleven that started in the 1-1 draw at home to West Ham on Saturday.
Only 5,530 in attendance at Deepdale but little did they know that they were set to see a piece of history and experience a VERY long night.
Fulham went behind on 35 minutes when Ryan Ledson put Preston ahead.
The visitors were overall the better team on the night and deserved their equaliser on 61 minutes from Reiss Nelson.
No more goals and with extra-time not a factor at this stage of the competition, straight to penalties for a ‘swift’ conclusion…
Former Newcastle United keeper Freddie Woodman in goal for Preston.
Just the 32 penalties later, the shootout score was 15 v 15, with both teams having missed one each.
Timothy Castagne stepped up to take the 33rd penalty of the shootout but lashed it over Woodman’s bar.
Ryan Ledson then stepping up to take the 34th penalty and send Preston through to the last 16.
A bit of League Cup history created, as this penalty shootout surpassed the 14 v 13 when Derby eventually beat Carlisle back in August 2016.
