Chelsea have long had Marcus Bettinelli as an inconspicuous figure in the squad. Since his free arrival in 2021 after a long spell at Fulham, the English goalkeeper has barely set foot on the pitch. Just one official appearance in four seasons portrays him as more symbolic than functional. At 33, he has been the third choice behind Mendy, Kepa, and most recently, Robert Sanchez. Despite his minor role, Bettinelli has kept a low profile, professional in training and useful in the dressing room, a role not always visible, but sometimes necessary for the team’s balance.

Now, according to The Athletic, Manchester City have shown an interest in bringing Bettinelli in. With Scott Carson out of the club, Guardiola’s team needs a third goalkeeper with experience, without demanding a leading role. The possibility has arisen just as Bettinelli’s contract enters its final year. City value his track record, with over 250 appearances for clubs such as Fulham and Middlesbrough. The operation would not be costly and would fit the profile of a substitute who can step in if needed, without upsetting the internal order. Chelsea seem open to listen to proposals.

T4O Opinion:

From the London club’s point of view, it does not seem like a significant loss. Bettinelli has hardly been in the squad, and, although he has a squad role, the sporting management could cover his departure without complications. The academy continues to produce promising goalkeepers, and the club still have Robert Sanchez as their main option, with alternatives that could arrive via the market if wages are released. Keeping a player with so little involvement does not represent an urgency. Moreover, releasing players like him can open the door to youngsters who need space to grow or even help free up budget for other more pressing areas, such as midfield or attack.

Loaning Bettinelli to City would be a logical move. Not only would it be a professional gesture to a player who has delivered without complaint, but it would also allow Chelsea to adjust the squad without major consequences. The impact on the dynamic of the squad would be minimal, as his absence would not alter the actual hierarchy in goal. Moreover, it could be a positive for the squad if the club takes the opportunity to refresh that third position with someone younger or more useful in the long term. In this situation, Chelsea have little to lose and at least a slight advantage to gain.
