The Major League Soccer secondary transfer window will open up on July 24, which means New York City FC can make some moves this summer.  There are a few positions they can improve on, and others require some depth.  Signings can be made now, but they cannot be registered until that date.  This includes trades as well.

At the same time, there are some players who could move on from the team.  It might seem like NYCFC cannot lose any players due to their thin depth.  However, moving on from players who do not get much playing time or because they are not performing well can lead to openings on the roster.

But who could possibly leave this summer?  Here are three NYCFC players who could leave by transfer, trade, or via a loan deal during the secondary transfer window.

Máximo Carrizo

Máximo Carrizo is one player who is full of potential.  However, the midfielder is not getting enough playing time in MLS and the MLS Next Pro.  As such, he is someone who could possibly be loaned out to another team, perhaps in the USL Championship or USL League One.

Carrizo needs playing time to further his development.  He is seen as someone who can be a future number ten and is only 17.  NYCFC should not give up on him yet, especially since he could make the jump to Europe one day.  It would not be smart, though, to let him walk elsewhere because he is so young.  A loan deal would be perfect for him, but it must be one where he will play often.

Strahinja Tanasijević

If there is one defender who should leave, despite the thin depth, then it is Strahinja Tanasijević.  The Serbian has been a little better this season, but he is still a liability in the backline.  Hence, it might make sense to sell him this summer.  Maybe, he would accept a trade to another team.

The NYCFC center-back is not always the best defensively, and some of his fouls can be costly.  Moreover, he is not always the first choice to cover for an injured center-back, which should be telling about his reliability level.

If there is any truth to the rumors about Raul Gustavo joining NYCFC, then this would allow Tanasijević to quickly be replaced.  At the same time, the club should bring in another defender.  It would be a plus if they could sign a versatile player.

Mounsef Bakrar

When Mounsef Bakrar first joined the team in the summer of 2023, it felt like the Pigeons finally found their striker.  He quickly hit the ground running before cooling off a little bit at the end of the season.  Of course, the idea was that he was adjusting to NYCFC.

However, the Algerian struggled to score regularly at the start of the 2024 season, and eventually, despite taking way too long, Alonso Martínez earned the starting striker spot.

This season, Bakrar has two goals and continues to miss shots he should make.  Arguably, when utilizing the eye test, he appears to look better and more comfortable on the pitch.  Still, after almost two full seasons with NYCFC, it might be smart for the striker to move on.  He might need a change in scenery.

Hence, Bakrar would make the most sense to depart the club in the secondary transfer window.  There is a condition, though.  He should not leave unless the Pigeons have another striker lined up, even if it is via a loan deal for the remainder of the season or a trade within MLS.
