After having signed the RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, FC Barcelona are now looking to strengthen their attack by signing the Athletic Club forward Nico Williams, who has been linked very closely with the Blaugrana club in the last few weeks.
Some weeks ago, there were reports that the Catalans had already reached a verbal personal agreement with the player. However, in recent weeks, negotiations between the two parties have faced roadblocks as the player has been asking for some guarantees and conditions to ensure his registration, something the club is reluctant to give.
In such a context, Mundo Deportivo reports that the winger is planning to hold a meeting with his close family members and representatives soon to make a final decision about his move to Barcelona, which remains his priority despite the complicated negotiations.
The main area of contention between the two parties is that the player wants the Blaugranes to guarantee his registration with La Liga for the next season, and if that is not the case, to be released by the club.
Deco has rejected this request as it could lead to significant legal problems for the Catalan club, and also because they are confident they will make the needed space on their wage bill to get both Nico and Joan Garcia registered.
Barcelona can accept the scenario of Nico leaving if he cannot be registered, but another club would have to pay the same amount that the Blaugranes do for the player to get him.
This clause will also not be entered in his contract, as they can do it at the end of the transfer window if they have not been able to find enough space to get him registered.
For now, the Catalans want Nico Williams to follow the example of Dani Olmo, who did not ask for any such conditions when signing for his childhood club. Barcelona would pay his release clause when the player gives his final okay, but the Catalans are unlikely to pay his release clause this week.
