‘2024 has been a terrible year for Newcastle United’ – Fact-checked

I have seen some Newcastle United fans claiming that 2024 has been a terrible (shocking, disastrous, whatever…) year.

Is that true?

Or yet another example of part of the Newcastle United fanbase digging themselves yet another big hole of negativity, that they then can’t/won’t climb out of?

Always a danger these days that too many gullible NUFC supporters will happily be blindly led by the media who are simply out for mischief with Newcastle United.

Alternatively, is it a case of ‘happy clappers’ who refuse to accept how poor United have allegedly been this past year?

I thought the best way to fact-check this was to compare Newcastle United these past two calendar years.

Which has been a better year for Newcastle United, 2023 or 2024?

So with one match remaining in 2024  at Old Trafford against Man U, here is the complete Newcastle United playing record in 2023, followed by the complete record in 2024 (with the exception of that game at Old Trafford on Monday to come):

Newcastle United in 2023:

Played 54 Won 25 Drawn 11 Lost 18

Percentage of games won: 46 percent

Percentage of games lost:33 percent

Newcastle United in 2023:

Played 45 Won 24 Drawn 9 Lost 12

Percentage of games won: 53 percent

Percentage of games lost: 26 percent

Conclusions:

I think some Newcastle United get too fixated on any negatives.

It isn’t helped by certain NUFC ‘fans’ on social media and YouTube who are so desperate for attention that they will literally say anything to try and get attention and clicks/likes.

Saying Newcastle United were a bit unlucky, or didn’t play as well as they can, isn’t part of the agenda for some. Instead, it has to be a ‘disgrace’, ‘worst performance I have ever seen’ and so on.

As the results above prove, you know, the actual facts, Newcastle United have done a lot better in 2024 than in 2023. Ahead of that game at Old Trafford, Newcastle United currently have won 7% more games in 2024 compared to 2023 AND lost 7% less matches in 2024.

Imagine if the same improvement (7% more wins and 7% less defeats) can be shown in 2025, if that turned out to be the case, it could be a spectacular next calendar year if Eddie Howe’s side won 60% of matches played and only lost 19% of games in 2025.
