Graham Potter has returned to the dugout a couple of months shy of two years since he was dismissed by Chelsea.

The 49-year-old has agreed a two-year deal at West Ham, taking over from Julen Lopetegui, who incredibly had taken training just hours before the announcement of his sacking became public knowledge.

Potter’s impressive rise to the very top of the game has seen him take Leeds Carnegie to third place in the Northern Counties East League Division One, to leading Swedish club Ostersunds from the fourth tier to the Europa League in just seven years.

There were plenty of admirers of his slick passing game and spells at Swansea and Brighton followed, before the leap of faith and a chance to manage Chelsea.

The move would ultimately backfire as Potter registered just 12 wins in 31 matches in charge of the Blues and he was often accused of being too nice to deal with the huge personalities within the dressing room.

Clearly irked by those claims, Potter responded before a particular Champions League match, stating: “If you think you can start a coaching career in the ninth tier of English football and get to this point now, with Chelsea and the Champions League, without sometimes getting angry or being nice, I would suggest you don’t know anything about anything.”

The act of defiance went down well amongst supporters who could finally see signs of the aggression that had been severely lacking on the pitch.

However, results didn’t improve and Potter was dismissed at the start of April as Chelsea recorded one of their worst seasons in history at the start of the Todd Boehly era.

Potter at West Ham seems like a good fit as Hammers fans had become bored of Lopetegui’s sterile football and lack of identity.

The English coach will bring a renewed sense of optimism and his brand of football will have emphasis on allowing key players like Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta to flourish.

It’s an opportunity for Potter to prove the doubters wrong and get his managerial career back on the right path. It feels like the right time for his return. After all Chelsea were still paying his £200,000 per week salary up until October.
