The long running Lawrence Shankland to Rangers saga has finally come to an end and not in the way many fans had hoped. After years of speculation links and near misses the Hearts captain has signed for English Championship side West Bromwich Albion in a deal believed to be worth around £3 million. It brings a close to a tiresome transfer trail that has seen Rangers linked with Shankland every window for the past three years without ever pulling the trigger.

Despite being one of Scotland’s most prolific strikers and regularly outperforming Rangers’ own forwards Shankland was never properly approached by the Ibrox hierarchy. New twist in Shankland to Rangers saga amid no contact highlighted the baffling refusal by the board and managers alike to seriously move for the talisman despite the obvious need for a consistent goal scorer. Supporters voiced frustration time and again as Rangers stumbled in front of goal while Shankland banged them in for Hearts.

There was a brief moment of belief that the club would finally act when Rangers to sign Lawrence Shankland this window if suggested the stars had aligned last summer. But as always nothing materialised. Whether due to internal disagreements a lack of funds or simply poor judgement Rangers let a golden opportunity pass. Once again another top Scottish player has left for down south where he will likely shine and remind everyone of what could have been.

Shankland to Rangers latest as press claim big change hinted at one final twist but by then the story had grown stale. Fans were exhausted by the same rumour cycle repeated endlessly with no action ever taken. Shankland for his part kept his head down and kept scoring but it was clear he had grown tired of the uncertainty too.

Now with Shankland heading to the Hawthorns Rangers must live with the fact they allowed another prolific Scot to slip through their fingers. The club’s failure to act on a long standing need may yet come back to haunt them especially if their striking woes continue next season. Once again Rangers have missed out on a deal that looked obvious to everyone except those in charge.
