Xabi Alonso wants Real Madrid starlet to perform duties of Modric or even Kroos | OneFootball

According to MARCA, Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso has a plan for Arda Guler in the 2025/26 season, which is to shift the young Turkish star from the wing into the heart of midfield, in a role similar to club legends Luka Modric or Toni Kroos.

Rather than using Guler as a wide attacker, Alonso wants him to operate centrally, dictating play and linking up with the rest of the team.

This idea first took shape during the FIFA Club World Cup, where Alonso tested Guler in a deeper position.

The youngster impressed, showing vision, control, and the ability to handle the pace of the game from midfield.

Guler to become key player in Alonso’s project

The timing of this tactical shift couldn’t be more relevant. Alonso’s midfield options are far from complete, with Eduardo Camavinga’s recent injury adding to the challenges.

The coach has yet to find his perfect starting XI, and the midfield remains the most uncertain department in the squad.

In the absence of Camavinga and Jude Bellingham, Alonso has Aurelien Tchouameni as the main pivot, supported by Guler and Dani Ceballos.

Given the circumstances, Guler’s inclusion in the starting XI seems almost certain. The youngster’s adaptability, combined with his technical skills, makes him a strong candidate to take over some of the creative duties once handled by Modric and Kroos.

For Guler, this could be a defining moment in his Real Madrid career. The switch to midfield would give him more involvement in the game, more touches on the ball, and the chance to become one of the team’s central figures.

For Alonso, it’s an opportunity to reshape his side around a talented player who offers both creativity and work rate.

If the plan works, Real Madrid could have in Guler not just a winger turned midfielder, but the next big playmaker to carry the team forward for years.
