According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Xabi Alonso has already given the green light to join Real Madrid, with the official announcement now only a ‘matter of short time’.

The journalist mentions that he will complete his move as soon as Real Madrid finalise the exit process of Carlo Ancelotti.

After weeks of behind-the-scenes planning, it appears Madrid are on the verge of welcoming back one of their most beloved former players, this time as manager, who happened to be Real Madrid’s only choice for this role.

In fact, the former midfielder could make the announcement as early as today during his press conference.

It is to be noted that this weekend marks Alonso’s final home game as Bayer Leverkusen coach, closing a historic chapter in Germany.

With the Spaniard’s decision made, Leverkusen have accelerated their managerial search, expecting Alonso’s departure to become official soon.

Closing a long chapter

It is no secret that Real Madrid have viewed Alonso as the natural heir to Ancelotti’s throne for some time. Though Ancelotti has achieved legendary status at the club, his agreement to take over the Brazil national team after the season has made this transition inevitable.

However, one complication remains: who will lead Real Madrid at the expanded Club World Cup in the United States this summer?

Brazil’s national team cannot afford to wait until mid-July for Ancelotti’s services, effectively ruling him out of continuing with Madrid until that tournament concludes.

An interim solution—possibly involving Santiago Solari—has been floated, but it is not ideal for either party.

Financial gain for Bayer

Another delicate aspect in this process is Alonso’s contractual release from Bayer Leverkusen. Real Madrid will have to pay around €8 million to release him from the remaining year of his deal.

The club hopes to structure this in a way that also compensates Ancelotti and allows for a smooth, respectful transition.

Given Alonso’s historic success with Leverkusen and his emotional ties to Madrid, all sides are reportedly motivated to handle the move with dignity and professionalism.
