According to journalist Rodra, in a recent behind-closed-doors friendly against Leganes, Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso made a surprising tactical decision by deploying David Alaba in a midfield role.
Although Alaba did not start the match, he was later tested in midfield, a move that raises questions about his role in the team moving forward.
Alonso’s starting line-up featured several key players and followed a seemingly aggressive 4-3-3 formation. Alvaro Carreras made his debut, while Dani Carvajal, Dean Huijsen, and Raúul Asencio lined up in defence.
The midfield trio consisted of Federico Valverde, Dani Ceballos, and Brahim Diaz, leaving no place for Alaba in the starting XI.
His appearance in midfield came later in the game, indicating Alonso’s willingness to explore alternative options in the middle of the park.
This experiment comes at a time when Alaba’s future at Real Madrid appears to be uncertain. Once considered a vital part of the squad, the Austrian now finds himself down the pecking order.

With Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, Huijsen, and even academy talent Asencio preferred in central defence, Alaba is effectively the fifth-choice centre-back at the moment.
Despite this, Alaba is determined to stay and prove his worth to Alonso. The 33-year-old has never shied away from a challenge and is now seemingly ready to reinvent himself if it means getting more minutes under his belt.
Interestingly, Alonso’s decision to try Alaba in midfield may also be linked to his search for a new Toni Kroos. With the German legend having retired, Real Madrid are yet to find a like-for-like replacement.
Although the club have explored options in the market, there is a belief internally that no player currently available can match Kroos’ quality and composure.
This may have led Alonso to consider Alaba, who has previous experience playing in midfield during his Bayern Munich days.
While it’s unclear whether this change will translate into regular appearances in competitive fixtures, the move certainly opens up new tactical possibilities.
