Wycombe Wanderers' signing of George Abbott will likely signal the end of their interest in Luca Connell and Michal Rosiak.
Wycombe Wanderers finally ended their hunt for a holding midfielder on Wednesday when they announced the signing of Tottenham Hotspur prodigy George Abbott on a season-long loan deal.
The Chairboys had been in the market for a new number six after Josh Scowen suffered an ACL injury at the tail end of last season.
Throughout the summer, Mike Dodds' side have chased the signature of Barnsley midfielder Luca Connell, with as many as four bids reportedly being launched and subsequently knocked back by the Tykes for their captain.
Another player touted to potentially join Wanderers was former Arsenal starlet Michal Rosiak, who was on trial with the club in pre-season. However, there has been no mention of the Polish midfielder since the Tottenham friendly almost two weeks ago.
Wycombe did end up signing someone who featured in that game though, as they confirmed the addition of Abbott on a season-long loan on Wednesday morning, ending their search for a new man in the pivot.
It's been some transfer window in South Buckinghamshire, with 12 new players through the door, two of whom came on Wednesday and are both in line to make their debuts when Stockport County come to town on Saturday.
The one we're honing in on is Abbott, who became the first loan signing of the summer for Wanderers, after Dodds and his recruitment team had spent the summer seeking a new number six, following Scowen's injury.
The Spurs hotshot arrives at Adams Park after an excellent campaign on loan with Notts County last season. He scored five goals and assisted a further six in 42 league outings, as the Magpies fell to defeat in the play-off semi-final.
Abbott also won EFL Goal of the Year for the 2024/25 season, with a sumptuous volley from a corner against Accrington Stanley. It was a goal you could watch 100 times on repeat, and still not get bored of it.
The midfield department at Wycombe already has some hugely exciting players, but without their beloved number four, it lacked someone who could sit deeper and do the dirty work, whilst helping progress the ball forwards in this new style of play.
That's exactly what Abbott can do, as he mentioned in an interview after signing for the club that the playing style he observed in the friendly against the Chairboys would suit his skillset quite nicely.
The arrival of the 19-year-old will have Barnsley supporters breathing a sigh of relief, as this likely signals the end of Wycombe's pursuit of their skipper Connell.
This has also cast doubts over whether trialist Rosiak will land a deal with the Buckinghamshire club, as everything has gone quiet regarding the former Arsenal youngster's time at the club since he featured for them against Spurs nearly two weeks ago.
Now, Wycombe's midfield department is brimming with quality. The likes of Abbott, Jamie Mullins, Caolan Boyd-Munce, Magnus Westergaard, and of course Scowen, when he returns, means it's unlikely there's much room for any more additions in that department.
The signing of the Spurs starlet is seemingly the end of Wanderers' hunt for a new number six, bringing to an end the Connell saga and also dealing a blow to the thought that signing Rosiak could still be on the cards.
