Wrexham are set to make a £1.2 million bid for the Bolton Wanderers box-to-box midfielder and captain George Thomason, as their squad-strengthening continues ahead of their return to the Championship, substantially out-bidding Huddersfield Town in the process.

The Red Dragons are back in the second tier following an absence of 45 years, and despite finishing comfortably clear of the chasing pack in second place behind Birmingham City in League One at the end of the 2024-25 season, there is plenty of work to do if they're to consolidate their position at a higher level next season.

But for all the conjecture over which players Wrexham may be interested in bringing in ahead of the new season, actual incoming transfer business at the Racecourse Ground has been fairly light, so far. Only two players have been confirmed as new signings. Ryan Hardie has arrived from Plymouth Argyle, while Welsh international goalkeeper Danny Ward has returned to the club at which he started his career 18 years ago on a free transfer from Leicester City.

Movement in the other direction has been considerably greater, with ten players having left the club, including striker Paul Mullin, who's gone on loan to Wigan Athletic, and striker Steven Fletcher, who was released upon the expiry of his contract. There will be at least one former Wrexham player at Bolton next season, with Sam Dalby having signed for the Trotters after being released at the end of his contract by Wrexham.

Huddersfield had been interested in Thomason, but they're unlikely to match Wrexham "spending power"

Marc Iles of the Bolton News has reported that Wrexham are preparing to make a bid of around £1.2 million for Thomason.

Huddersfield's interest in Thomason was already established, with reports earlier in the week that the Terriers were set to make an offer of £750,000 for the player. But if Wrexham are prepared to bid one and a half times what Huddersfield were going to while also being able to offer Championship football to a player who has never played at that level before, the Red Dragons will move into pole position in the chase to acquire his services.

Bolton have already brought in new players this summer, including midfielder Xavier Simons, who arrived from Hull City in June for an undisclosed fee, but he is the only midfielder to have arrived at the club so far. They've also been linked with Jesper Ceesay of the Swedish side IFK Norrköping, who only has six months to run on his contract and is available at a reasonable price.

Bolton do already have quite a packed roster of midfield players as well, including Josh Sheehan, Aaron Morley, Sonny Sharples-Ahmed, Joel Randall and Klaidi Lolos. There will be a lot of competition for midfield places there next season, regardless of whether Thomason leaves or not.

This could be the right time for Thomason to make the move up to the Championship

George Thomason is the longest-serving member of the Bolton Wanderers squad, having signed for the club from non-league Longbridge Town in January 2020.

Since then, he's gained more game-time as he's grown into his position, becoming an increasingly integral component of their midfield. He's made 80 League appearances for Bolton over the last two seasons alone, and was made the team's captain by former manager Ian Evatt in September 2024.

It's been reported that Thomason remains happy to stay Bolton, but a move to Wrexham would be a step up in several different respects. The Bolton captain has still never played above League One level since joining the club, so this would be a fresh challenge, but there is also the possibility of a substantial pay hike and a rise in the player's profile as a result of Wrexham's broader media profile.

A move to Huddersfield, by comparison, might be considered more of a sideways move for him. The Terriers only finished two places and four points below Bolton last season. This, however, seems like a moot point if Wrexham's financial firepower is going to be too much for Bolton to resist.

Bolton have no obligation to sell, as Thomason is under contract with them until 2027, but it is often unwise for a club to stand in the way of a player stepping up to a new level. And at 24 years of age, this could be the right time for Thomason to make that move up to a higher level.
