Nick Cushing says City’s participation at the World Sevens presents a strong opportunity for the Club.
The Blues are one of eight teams at the inaugural seven-a-side tournament held in Estoril, Lisbon alongside other European giants.
City then opened our campaign with a emphatic 4-0 win over Rosengard where goals from Aoba Fujino, Kerolin Nicoli (two) and Aemu Oyama helped us to our first point in the competition.
And the Blues interim head coach believes the attacking focus of World Sevens aligns with City’s ethos.
“It’s an attacking football game, there is attacking in every moment of the game so I knew it was going to be exciting, and I enjoyed it," he declared.
“I think it really suits the style of football that every team is going to play. Attacking and there’s going to be loads of goals.
“It’s new, it’s exciting and it’s the way we believe the game should be played. You can see by the way the organisers have picked the rules, it’s to force attacking moments in every instance.
“For us, it sort of matches the way we believe the game should be played and it’s a great opportunity and there are some top teams here.
“[Competing at World Sevens] we felt it was the right thing for us to do.”
Among City’s travelling 15-player squad are a number of the Club’s exciting youngsters across different positions.
In our opening game against Rosengard the Blues called upon Lily Murphy, Codie Thomas and Poppy Pritchard who all impressed in the success.
And Cushing believes World Sevens will provide those at the beginning of their fledgling careers unique challenges which will only aid their development.
He added: “It gives them [the younger players] an opportunity to be with the first-team. In my opinion it won’t dictate whether you’re good enough to play in the first-team or not.
“This will expose you technically and it’s a real attacking form of the game, so it’s more of an opportunity for them rather than anything formal. It’s exciting.”
