Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed they have appointed Gary O’Neil as their new manager.
The 40-year-old has reportedly signed a three-year contract, replacing Julen Lopetegui as head coach.
O’Neil earned plaudits for his impressive work at Bournemouth last season. He came into the job at the start of the 2022-23 season and led them to Premier League safety with a 15th-place finish.
But in a shocking move, the Cherries owner Bill Foley sacked the former Middlesborough midfielder.
Foley later explained that the English boss was sacked to give the club a new identity.
O’Neil has now returned to management with Wolves who are set to begin their seventh consecutive season in the top-flight.
The Midlands club parted company with Julen Lopetegui who was reportedly unhappy with their financial situation.
Lopetegui arrived at Molineux Stadium when they were mired in the relegation battle. But he inspired a huge upturn in form, ultimately securing a 13th-place finish with seven points ahead of the drop zone.
The Spaniard was unsatisfied with the club’s lack of transfer activity this summer.
Besides making Matheus Cunha and Boubacar Traore loan deals permanent, they have only signed Matt Doherty and Tom King so far.
While the 2023 transfer window has seen them losing Raul Jimenez, Ruben Neves, Conor Coady, Nathan Collins and Ryan Giles.
