Barcelona star Wojciech Szczęsny has spoken out on the prospect of being replaced by Marc-André ter Stegen in the Blaugrana goal.
Shot-stopper Ter Stegen’s name has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital over the course of the last week.
This comes after the German international, sidelined since all the way back in September owing to a serious knee injury, took a significant step back towards a return to the pitch.
Ter Stegen has now rejoined group training alongside the rest of Hansi Flick’s squad at The Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
Taking as much into consideration, it is now looking increasingly likely that the German will be back available for selection before the season is out.
Such a situation could leave Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick in something of a pickle, with Ter Stegen his true no.1, but Wojciech Szczęsny shining in the 32-year-old’s absence.
One individual who would have no qualms in the case of the former being restored to starting duties, though, is Szczęsny himself.
Drawn on such a prospect by the media (as cited by Fabrizio Romano) early this week, former Arsenal and Juventus man Szczęsny assured:
“I came to Barça to replace Ter Stegen and I would have no problem if he came back and took his place. If the coach decides at some point that the captain should come back and take over in goal, for me it is completely normal.”
