William Saliba is recovering “very well” from his injury, but Mikel Arteta says he will miss Arsenal’s Uefa Champions League meeting with Dinamo Zagreb.
The Gunners head into the European tie at the Emirates Stadium with several first-team players sidelined through injury, including Bukayo Saka, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Saliba became the latest Arsenal player to go on the treatment table after he was seen clutching his leg at the end of last week’s win over Spurs, causing him to miss the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s game, Mikel Arteta said that the France international is returning to fitness, but needs more time to recover.
“He’s evolving really well,” the Spaniard said. “The last few days he was feeling much better already but this game comes a little bit too early for him.”
Meanwhile, Arteta said that the return of Ethan Nwaneri and Riccardo Calafiori to team training was “very positive news” for Arsenal.
The teenage winger has been out of action since he was forced off with a muscular problem at halftime of the 1-1 draw with Brighton. Calafiori missed recent games against Aston Villa, Spurs and Manchester United, but the pair could feature against Zagreb.
“Very positive news,” he said. “We missed them for a few weeks and they returned today for training. They will be available for the game.”
A win will effectively book Arsenal’s place in the Champions League‘s round of 16 and bypass the playoff round in February.
“So far we have done really well,” said Arteta. “We are in a strong position and now it’s time to capitalise at home. The work that we have done for many months, we need a strong performance against a really good side and we’ll try to do that.”
