Virgil Van Dijk has been the bedrock of Liverpool’s defence for nearly eight years and thankfully it looks increasingly likely that he will extend his stay with the Reds beyond this season.
There has been certainty around the futures of Salah, Alexander Arnold and Van Dijk but it looks like FSG have got the ball rolling to keep the three star men at the club as the Arne Slot era gets underway.
Van Dijk signed from fellow Premier League club Southampton in January 2018 and his performances have been impeccable year in and year out.
A contributor to the club’s successes since he signed, he is now regarded as one of the best CBs in the world. Losing him would be a significant loss to the Liverpool side who have the best defensive record in the Premier League and the Champions League.
The partnership he has formed with Ibrahima Konate has been one of the most assured the club has seen in their history mixed with youth and experience they could prove to be a formidable pairing for the coming seasons.
Ibou Konate is currently the BEST centre-back in the Premier League!
Liverpool’s defence is what has left them vulnerable in season seasons coupled with injury and an abundance of rotation, but a regular partnership along with the talents of Gomez and Quansah have been a vital part of Slot’s scintillating start to this campaign.
The Reds have matched their defensive performances with outstanding performances in attack, and it is clear that under Van Dijk’s leadership, he has become the figurehead of Slot’s new philosophy for this club.
Updating the fans on the progress of Van Dijk’s contract, Slot remained tight-lipped.
He said: “There are ongoing discussions with the people Virgil says he has to talk to, and that’s not me as you know. I talk to him about other things. Virgil is completely right that he doesn’t know what his future is if he hasn’t signed the contract yet.”
Understandably he has to be careful with what he is saying but the ongoing discussion has been highlighted by Van Dijk.

Last month he said: “I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know, we will see what happens in the future. My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else.”
These are the kind of comments we usually hear concerning contractual situations but it seems Van Dijk’s heart remains firmly in Merseyside for the time being and that he has unfinished business at the club.
Two weeks ago BBC announced that Van Dijk had entered talks with the club’s urgency to get the contract extended before he is available to sign elsewhere on a six-month pre-contract deal.
There remains a cautious optimism around the club that Van Dijk will remain Liverpool’s leader in the seasons ahead, all we can do for now is wait patiently…
