Will Julian Nagelsmann remain as Germany head coach beyond the 2026 World Cup? | OneFootball

When Julian Nagelsmann took over the reins as head coach of the German national team ahead of Euro 2024, there was a general sense of disillusionment towards Die Nationalmannschaft.

Having endured a torrid time towards the end of Hansi Flick’s tenure, German fans were looking towards their home European Championships with a significant amount of dread.

However, quite quickly, the former Bayern Munich head coach was able to turn the atmosphere towards the national team around on and off the pitch.

A positive run of games with a new-look side captured the hearts of fans once again, as Germany enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where they were outdone by eventual champions Spain.

Nevertheless, there was a belief that had Nagelsmann’s side overcome Spain, they would have eventually been crowned champions themselves, being regarded as the second-best side at the tournament.

Since then, the national team has remained undefeated, and there is now hope that Nagelsmann will extend his deal at the DFB until beyond the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking to Sport Bild, Germany’s sporting director Rudi Völler explained his future plans for Nagelsmann:

“We will try to convince Julian that it makes sense for him to remain national coach for a few more years. I know he likes it, but he’s still a young guy who perhaps has ambitions to do something else.”

While there will undoubtedly be rumours about possible successors to Nagelsmann, such as Jürgen Klopp, it is clear to see how appreciated the 37-year-old is, and should Germany continue to perform under his guidance, then there would be no reason for Nagelsmann to look elsewhere.
