Milan are in the process of finalising a deal with Atletico Madrid for Alvaro Morata, a signing that makes perfect sense for Paulo Fonseca’s new project.

The 31-year-old forward played an important role in Spain’s successful campaign at the European Championship in Germany and is now ready to return his focus to club football, where the Rossoneri are preparing to pay his €13m at Atletico.

Morata has agreed to sign a four-year deal with Milan and will lead the frontline for Fonseca’s side, adding an important reinforcement following the failure to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, who ultimately switched over to Manchester United.

Why Morata is perfect for Milan

Morata is a flexible and hard-working number nine, able to be decisive in front of goal as well as playing an important role in the final third, regularly dropping deep to link up with his teammates and take part in attacking moves.

The 31-year-old proved this at Euro 2024 with Spain, where he managed just one goal but featured prominently, acting as a focal point for his teammates whilst also leading the pressing line.

Fonseca has already clearly identified what kind of striker he wants in his new system, revealing at a press conference last week that he wants ‘who is able to play without much space in the last 30 meters’, something clearly in Morata’s wheelhouse.

Looking at the underlying numbers for the 2023-24 La Liga season, it’s apparent that Morata is both confident in front of goal and also plays a quietly vital role off the ball, impressing in aerial battles and doing a key job tackling and nicking the ball off opponents.

Fonseca also highlighted how he wants his new striker to ‘give a lot to the team’, something Morata always does, making his signing a clever and low-cost choice from Milan.
