Manchester United have struggled to score goals in the Premier League this season – only five teams have netted a lower tally.
The introduction of a new attacking system by manager Ruben Amorim has also contributed partly to their goalscoring form.
Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation requires wingers to play as attacking midfielders behind a central striker. Other than Amad Diallo, United forwards have struggled to adapt to the formation.
Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have had disciplinary issues with Amorim. Rashford is now on his way out of the club.
These factors have led to Man United seeking to bolster their attack in the current transfer window.
However, the club must be financially shrewd to avoid breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
United reportedly have the ‘ability to spend with some freedom’, but the high possibility of missing out on Champions League qualification will hamper them.
They must target low-cost players if they are to stay within PSR limits. Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani is an option.
The Frenchman is on a weekly salary of €174,808 (£147,528), which is outside the top ten of United’s highest earners. He would also be signed on loan, making him more appealing to United.
However, Man United are now on the verge of missing out on Muani as he has ‘accepted the proposal’ of Serie A giants Juventus, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
His decision to join Juventus means that United can only bolster their attacking options and strengthen other positions if they dispose of some of the club’s biggest earners.
Signing a forward will cost a premium fee and salary, affecting the chances of reinforcing other positions.
No forward with Muani’s profile is available on loan presently, meaning United must buy if they intend to strengthen their attack this month.
