Inter captain Lautaro Martinez is not expected to be part of Simone Inzaghi’s starting XI when Inter take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Inzaghi is instead expected to hand an opportunity to summer signing Mehdi Taremi, which will be the Iran international’s first Champions League outing for the Nerazzurri. He will be joined by the in-form Marcus Thuram in a 3-5-2.
Despite finishing as the Capocannoniere in Serie A last season, Lautaro Martinez is yet to find the net for Inter this season, following a busy summer with Argentina, winning the Copa America and finishing as the competition’s leading goalscorer.
La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that fatigue is the main reason behind Inzaghi’s decision to leave his captain out of the starting line-up.
The decision had already been made before Inter set off for Manchester, as Inzaghi tested Thuram and Taremi together during the final training session on home soil.
With a busy week ahead, Lautaro Martinez is in contention to reclaim his starting position for the Derby della Madonnina against Milan in Serie A on Sunday.
