Kevin De Bruyne has revealed why he took matters in his own hands and announced he will be leaving Manchester City in the coming months whilst his family were away on holiday.
The Belgian will move on from the Etihad Stadium at the end of a decorated, 10-year spell in Manchester that saw De Bruyne win six Premier League titles, a maiden Champions League title, a UEFA Super Club, a FIFA Club World Cup and a historic treble.
There have been questions marks looming over De Bruyne’s future all season and whether an agreement will be reached between all parties to renew the 33-year-old’s current deal, which expires on 30 June.
It is yet to be known whether De Bruyne will play any role for Manchester City at their upcoming FIFA Club World Cup commitments in the United States, with the Blues still fighting to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
De Bruyne started for City in a crucial 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday as the reigning Premier League champions took a major step towards securing a top five league finish in their bid to ensure Champions League qualification next term.
Three wins in their last four games and results elsewhere have put Manchester City in fourth place in the league table ahead of Nottingham Forest’s tricky test away at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday evening.
De Bruyne starred for City in an enthralling 5-2 comeback win against Crystal Palace last weekend and after helping his side win on the road in Merseyside at the weekend, the playmaker spoke at length with reporters in the mixed zone on his contract situation.
“It was half a week till I reported it, it wasn’t nice. My family weren’t home. They were on holiday so it was a bit weird (to announce his Manchester City exit),” De Bruyne said, as quoted by Aadam Patel writing for Mail Sport.
“After the decision and when I came out, it was more relief when I reported it to the outside world compared to when I knew and nobody else. You don’t know what to do with the emotion with everybody and how to handle it at the club. Now it’s out, it’s fine, people see the way I am. I try to do my best and win games for the team. I love playing football, that’s it.”
It has come to a sad ending between De Bruyne and Manchester City, who decided against renewing the playmaker’s contract due to a belief that this was the right time to part ways with the ageing midfielder, who retains he still has the ability to play at the highest level.
